We’ve got a nice mix of DnD miniatures and scatter terrain today, and we think these nifty 3D prints deserve a spot on your gameboard for one of your upcoming encounters. We’ll also share how we plan to integrate them into our own adventures in case you need a few thought starters.

We’ll start with another free, fab download from mz4250 insane DnD miniatures library. This imposing Violet Fungus Necrohulk is certain to bring forth some “WTF is that?” responses. You can scale this one to fit your planned encounter. We kept it simple and just did a 2×2 d20 square, but we recall the default size being pretty insane.

DM Ben was the colorist here, and this one was a breeze to paint. Even though this mini is categorized as a Violet Fungus by name, it looked and felt more like an animated tree to us. Hence, that’s how we painted it up:

• Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.
• Tree Layer: ASP Dark Wood + Vallejo Ochre Brown drybrush.
• Tree Edging: FAN Emerald Forest edging (for moss).
• Skulls: ASP Pallid Bone.

The star of this show is the forest base as the woodland ground cover makes all those encased skulls scream, baby! For its DnD 5e stats, the Internet has everything. We’ll probably add this one to our free Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster Table.

Next up, we’re updating one of our scatter terrain pieces from earlier this week, which featured our new Rum Runner Dwarven Trio NPCs. The Soddy Buddy Boys make a particular moonshine that is highly sought after on the Waterdeep Black Market. Beyond the cool miniatures, we showcased a big Ale cask, but the problem was that the barrel was way too big for a gang that is constantly trying to stay one step ahead of the law.

So, we decided to go with a much smaller set of barrels that could easily be hoisted onto their shoulders if they had to make a break for it. And for that scatter, we 3D-printed a piece from EC3D Designs’ Depths of Savage Atoll Kickstarter.

Nothing too tricky to paint up, as all you need is your go-to wood color and some metal banding. Our sneaky Dwarves mixed one of their moonshine barrels with two other everyday liquid barrels and grab it from the wrack whenever they have to make a quick exit. Another idea would be to include an even smaller crate of bottles. This STL was either by Cast n Play or STL Miniatures, but you get the idea here.

We snapped a quick pic so you can see how much better this fits in our Hovertrain car than the larger one we originally highlighted. But again, this wasn’t about the amount of space the scatter took up, but more about it making sense in the NPC’s storyline.

Lastly, we’re also circling back to our Train Tuesday post from earlier this week. We made a really fun Hovertrain Ticket Counter by Cast n Play, but it occurred to us that we didn’t have someone behind the counter to collect the fare and issue a boarding pass.

Brite Minis made this choice easy with this supportless Gnome Wizard miniature. He’s from their monthly Patreon and had all the details we needed to fit our train-ticket-seller scenarios.

Sunrise Sven was Chief Colorist here, and boy howdy, did this cranky little fella turn out great. The blue robe fits The Forgotten Rails’ colors. The book in his hand certainly could be taken as a ticket log and ledger. His raised hand and scowl definitely give off a how-many-tickets and let’s keep-er-movin’ vibe.

Here’s a quick shot of him inside his woodland Ticket Office. Fits like an absolute glove, like this lil’ dude was meant to be.

This weekend is a momentous occasion for DM Ben as his daughter is graduating from NAU! We’re driving up to Flagstaff on Saturday for her ceremony and won’t be back till the weekend is well over, so there won’t be much time for him to prep next week’s articles. Still, we’ll do our best to sneak in a post or two next week.

In an earlier Train Tuesday post, we teased the idea of having a new NPC group of rum runners that use The Forgotten Rails to stay one step ahead of the law. We already 3D-printed the mysterious contraption that turns their already tasty ale concoctions into one of the best sips in the Realm. The problem is these Dwarves don’t wanna pay any taxes and don’t like “the man” messing with their moonshine. So, today we thought we would show our newest NPCs in more detail.

So, let’s map this one out and share all the 3D prints to bring our newest NPCs to life! We’ll start with the first of our three short-stack brothers, this small but mighty dwarf by Brite Minis. We especially love this supportless miniature’s pose and scowl.

Sunrise Sven painted this one for us, and he crushed this angry ale lover. Sven is primarily an Army Painter Speedpaint guy, and he’s quite good at it. His color combination is spot on, while you clearly get the sense that he’s not to be messed with.

Next up, we have two more stout dwarven miniatures by good ol’ Dutchmogul. We snatched up these free downloads in a New York minute, including this Dwarfclan Gunner and his Dwarfclan Tinkerer counterpart. He originally designed these at an 18mm scale, so we nudged them up to fill a single d20 square. We simply prefer larger miniatures in our campaign for a myriad of reasons.

Sunrise Sven also grabbed a brush for these two hearty fellas, and we think our newest TTRPG miniatures turned out frickin’ awesome. Perfect balance of leather and armor, along with two more mighty beards that can’t be beat!

Before we get to all the NPC particulars, we wanted to add an oversized keg scatter terrain piece to the mix. This mighty cask is by EC3D Designs and is from their fun Heroes Hoard Tavern Inn series. There’s a little nostalgia here, as this was one of the very first STLs we ever 3D-printed.

This alcohol storage unit fits snugly in our Hovertrain Ale Car by Aether Studios. However, while writing today’s DnD blog post, we paused to rethink our TTRPG scatter plan here. This piece is far too bulky and heavy for a group of rum runners constantly on the go. So, we’re going to look for some smaller barrels that better fit this NPC narrative.

Now, let’s get these NPC personas and details all prim and proper. Each of our Dwarves has a distinct role in their profiteering scheme. DM Ben has dubbed this outlaw, Dwarven Clan, the Suddy Buddy Boys. So, let’s meet this law-skirtin’ trio:

• Possible Scenario: Illegal rum runners

Basically, someone has to brew it, someone has to sell it, and someone has to secure it. For their DnD 5e stat blocks, we’ll utilize MonsterShuffler.com and their slick NPC Generator tool. Their login system seems a bit broken at the moment (thanks to a bunch of new website maintenance in 2026), so just save any creations in a separate Word Doc, and you’re golden. Another option is to peruse this NPC Statblock Compendium PDF.

We’ve got another great DnD blog post today that further improves an earlier encounter write-up. Gotta love it when time is on our side and our players haven’t quite reached this previously prepped point in the campaign. Circling back and improving earlier home-brewed content actually brings us a lot of joy.

Let’s briefly recap to get everyone up to speed. Back in June 2024, good ol’ Laughing Bear Games blessed us with his amazing brush skills and skillfully painted this amazing Stigmatic Nun from STL Miniatures and their Orphanage set. This fierce lady became an instant classic in our minis collection, and yet another home-brewed NPC was brought to life. Praise be!

We dubbed her Sister Mary Francis, and she was the Reverend Mother of a secret organization of Nuns whose “soul” job (pun intended) was to fiercely inspect dungeons to ensure any of fallen folk were properly passed on and didn’t return to this plane in undead form. These fearless nuns went under the name of Soul Finders. Ultimately, the church decided their work was far too dangerous as too many nuns had fallen prey to the innate peril of these dungeons.

Sister Mary, who has a bit of screw loose, refused to step down and continued what she called the divine eternal work of Sarenrae. A handful of her younger followers from the convent were in awe of her holy commitment and pledged to follow her to her last breath. These skilled lady warriors are called Sista Soldiers and constantly have Sister Mary’s back, as the dungeons often remain incredibly dangerous when they go in for a new soul-purging mission.

And that’s where today’s miniature spotlight comes in, thanks to a chilling Stigmatic Nun STL from Brite Minis. This awesome TTRPG 3D print is part of their monthly Patreon, and we doubt you’ll slice just one.

Since we already have the D&D 5e Tresendar Manor mini dungeon crawl prepped and ready to roll next session, it was either now or never to get these miniatures painted. So, DM Ben hyperventilated in a bag for 10 minutes, then picked up a brush and pledged to do his best.

• Rope Belt: ASP Pallid Bone.
• Hat: ASP Holy White + White edging.
• Base: ASP Gravelord Grey + grey, white drybrushing.
• Core Wash: FAN Soft Tone.

DM Ben originally had the Sister Soldier’s classic coif much dirtier, but he went back and added more white to it to better match its legendary status. Again, considering he is a very novice painter, DM Ben and the team were rather happy with how these bad arse ladies turned out!

Now, when the Reverend Mother comes stomping down that next deep, dark hallway, muttering her warding prayers in Portuguese-ish, and sliding her Rosary beads through her sausage fingers, she’ll have the proper escort, covering her six and ensuring no one interferes with Sarenrae’s divine light.

STL Miniatures already provided DnD 5e stats for Sister Mary Francis; we need to whip up some stats for our Sista Soldiers. We did some Googling and liked the Veteran Soldier stat-angle (but with a higher to hit to better match our level six party). AC: 17, HP: 58, Multi-attack: +7/1d8+3 slashing for longsword and one short sword attack: +5/1d6+3. DM Ben just upped their strength as these ladies are fiercely strong.

Sister Mary’s bodyguards actually have a better armor class than even she does because she feels that thick armor interferes with her communicating with her god.

Part seven already?! My oh my, how the scatter terrain time flies. Hopefully, we’ve inspired you to 3D print some of these STLs along the way, but if not, maybe today’s entries will finally tug at your TTRPG heartstrings. It’s wild, right? You probably wouldn’t go out of your way to make some of these, but when a DM is trying to fill out a new encounter, it sure is nice to be able to pull from a robust DnD scatter collection.

Let’s start with this amazing holier-than-thou religious statue by Brite Minis. This STL is dubbed the Statue of St. John Nepomucene. He was a 14th-century Bohemian priest and martyr, revered as the patron saint of confessors, bridges, and the Czech Republic. He’s also a free download (but be sure to check out the rest of their no-cost models on Thingiverse).

What really got us jazzed about this particular DnD 3D Print is the paint job. DM Ben was experimenting with his statue paint schemes and finally tried Army Painter Fanatic Verdigris paint color. You could also try Citadel’s Technical Nihilakh Oxide paint. Very simple steps though:

• Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.
• Layer FAN True Copper.
• Drybrush FAN Verdigris  (or Citadel Nihilakh Oxide).
• Statue Base: ASP Runic Grey.
• Black Wash.

DM Ben is going to put this one outside M Knight Holymon’s Church of Consequences.

Next up is this nifty ammo sack by terrain mastermind STL Miniatures. This TTRPG scatter piece is from their Arrows and Bow Maker Set. Disclaimer: We often upsize scatter terrain to be a bit larger than the maker intended. We do this for several reasons: they’re easier to paint and to pick up off the game table.

DM Ben likes these sorta milestone markers because they really come in handy when you want to emphasize something in an encounter. For example, maybe this mysterious ammo was sitting in a storeroom, long forgotten by its original owner. These loose arrows could be expertly crafted and have magic properties.

Now, let’s take a look at this epic cracked bell that seems to have fallen from its lofty perch and onto a very unlucky fellow. If we had to put money on it, we would say Curufin, since he loves making these types of crushed STLs. We also got a chance to test that same sorta aged patina look, but this time we applied it over a darker metal. Now, the bronze statue above certainly looks better, but one has to experiment just in case we were overlooking another nice combo. We really don’t mind how this one turned out, though.

We’re going to round out today’s TTRPG dungeon dressing entries with a few really generic pieces that still provide value in your encounter designs. This first one is a simple covered basket. In a previous post, we shared a nifty set of food baskets that utilized Green Stuff World’s Elfwood Brown paint color. We applied two coats to those, which makes the basket material darker. However, you can just do one coat to give it a more aged look, as if it’s been out in the sun and had plenty of use. The cloth cover is a snap, since you can use the trusty ASP Pallid Bone for that effect.

DM Ben always loves containers of any kind because he can hide things in them, like smaller treasures or creatures. We think this DnD 3D print is by STL Miniatures, but we can’t say for certain.

Lastly, we have this small wooden platform with a makeshift bedroll on it. We once again feel this file is likely to be from STL Miniatures or Cast n Play, but our MMF searches turned up snakeyes. DM Ben likes to drop in some mystery items now and then and watch the players draw their own crazy conclusions. If they come up with a really good sleuthing suggestion, he’ll even run with it. Never hesitate to let the players create some of your encounter details or stories.
