Greetings, fellow train lovers. Fresh off a holiday hobby weekend, we have a couple of new DnD 3D prints that certainly belong in The Forgotten Rails. Let’s take a closer look.

We’ve got two new miniatures today, since DM Ben officially kicked off the Hovertrain era a few game sessions back, and he still needs plenty of new minis and NPC personalities to build new encounters. Memorable miniatures with quirky Rhealm roles and wild traits always liven your DnD campaign.

Today, we’ve got one Construct that only works on highly sensitive train tech, and then we’ve got a second mini who dishes out a one-way sentence for anyone caught robbing a valuable Hovertrain. Two great roles with plenty of future encounter options, right?

Let’s start with The Ultimate Modron by mz4250. This lanky-limbed STL is a free download, and DM Ben instantly knew where he would place it within The Forgotten Rails. Now, we already have our Orc Fixers and Medic Constructs. However, we wanted a unique robot built exclusively to service the powerful Hovertrain engines. Their magic and tech are so complex that 3M only trusts this specific service unit to work on the hulking steel machines.

Rumor has it that there are only a limited number of these special repair bots in service. They’re called HEMI units, which stands for Hover Engine Maintenance Intellects. Their four arms are built to lift tremendous weight or slide into very tight spots. They’re heavily guarded when working on Hovertrain engines, and when a HEMI is not in use, one is stored in engineer Collis Strutt’s personal chambers and the other is with wizard Leland Farce.

DM Ben painted this one and simply utilized Army Painter’s wonderful line of metallics. He used FAN Uniform Grey, ASP Enchanted Steel, FAN True Brass, and ASP Talos Bronze. Then he put down a FAN Grimdark Shadow Wash for a dirty, industrial effect. Apply a clear base, and this unit is ready for duty.

The other fun DnD miniature we wanted to feature today is this rumbling Executioner by Cast n Play. This cutthroat is from their wonderful Rotting Crown set. Omin Dran knows civil unrest greatly affects profitability, so he declared the ultimate punishment for anyone caught robbing one of his beloved Hovertrains – death. He knows that his lumbering trains are disliked by forest-friendly folk while loved by shifty robbers. His only hope is that this severe retribution decree travels fast and dissuades others from compromising his operations.

Novice painter DM Ben was pressed into service to color this one and accepted the task since the STL is nice and bulky (taking up a 2×2 d20 set of squares). He utilized the following paints to get this “It’s a living” fella onto our game table.

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Hood: Citadel Contrast Flesh Tearers Red,

Metal Armor: FAN Gun Metal.

Skin: ASP Crusader Skin + Flesh Wash.

Weapon Handle: GSW Walnut Brown.

Weapon Effect: FAN Dry Blood.

Straps/Waist: ASP Hardened Leather.

Boots/Gloves: Citadel Contrast Snakebite Leather.

Pants: WAR Matt Black.

For the base, he decided to go with a darker earth effect to add some more doom and gloom to the whole piece.

Here’s a shot of each miniature from the back. HEMI looks so darn good and sorta has that classic Lost in Space vibe going. For our big man with an axe to grind, local Waterdeep residents call him the King’s Razor. Peasants literally bet on whether he can carry out his orders with a single blow (as he has a crazy streak going).

Until next time!

Greetings, fellow super stealthers! We’ve got an extra sneaky DnD blog post for you today, so keep your head down and be mindful! Trouble lurks ahead.

We’ve got a couple of tongue-in-cheek, free downloads today of the covert kind. These were a snap to 3D print and darn fun to paint. DM Ben is looking forward to sneaking these into our DnD campaign. Keep your game fun, y’all – that’s what it’s all about.

Look, we all don’t start out as excellent robbers. It’s tricky business and requires a lot of repetition to work out all the kinks. We’ve got one STL that is deceptively brilliant and another that, well… there’s plenty of room for improvement.

We’ll start with this fabulous Bacon Moose by the magnificent mz4250. No idea how he even came up with this silly STL in the first place, but we knew instantly that it had a place in our display case. We just had a different spin on this one.

This DnD scatter terrain piece certainly could have been painted like bacon, but that would be a tough insert in a game. Maybe as a kitchen monster in a house robbery gone bad, but instead, our new moose would serve as an excellent decoy.

DM Ben plans to place this one in a dense forest where the players might be on the hunt. Our adventurers will see what they think is a prized moose barely sticking out in the thick underbrush. Then, as the players approach their intended prey, a group of bandits will spring from their excellent cover, and swords will be a swingin’!

For painting, we tried Green Stuff World’s Walnut Brown Dipping Ink. It’s our newest favorite wood color, and we’re absolutely adding it to our arsenal as a go-to pick. DM Ben just added a dark tone wash and finished it with a nice forest flock job. Easy peasy.

Now we move from the sneaky and stealthy to woolfully baaaad (puns intended). This time we lean on one of our favorite new DnD creators, good ol’ Toadstool Weaver. He dubbed this one “Two Kobolds Pretending,” and we instantly fell in love with this RPG print. His library is full of fantastic free 3D prints (but of course, tips are encouraged).

You’re going to love this one, as it was a snap to paint. Novice painter DM Ben stepped up to color this one and get it on the game table, so let’s see his simple steps.

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Head: ASP Holy White.

Eyes: ASP Blood Red.

Tarp: GSW Komodo Khaki + Soft Tone Wash.

Tarp Stitching: GSW Skull Linen Dipping Ink.

Feet: WAR Scaly Hide + Green Wash + Dark Tone Wash.

Once all those steps were done, DM Ben added the Soft Tone Wash to the tarp stitching (to make it look more worn), then he did a very light drybrush on the entire tarp for a little more weathering. Lastly, he slapped it on a clear base – doneso.

Could our adventurers mistake this moose for fair game at a farther distance? Absolutely. Do wandering sheep have green, reptilian feet and bright red eyes? Nooooope. But hey, we applaud the effort.

Until next time!

Greetings, fellow beachcombers! We’ve got a new Wandering Monster of angry proportions, so let’s see what all the fuss is about.

So, we’re technically not strolling through the forest today. More so, it’s like you’re walking on a beach or near some shallow water. Hence, this isn’t technically a wilderness monster and is more water-esque. We’ll eventually do an aquatic and amphibious table, but for now, we’ll add them in our main free outdoor table as an option for thee.

Today’s STL comes from the marvelous mz4250 and his brilliant DnD design skillz. This TTRPG 3D print is a Crab Folk monster and, of course, a free download. We love this bruiser-style sculpt and felt we had a great handle on how to paint him.

In case you’re in a time crunch or you’re also a prepainted miniatures collector, don’t forget about the most-excellent Seas and Shores series, which includes a Crab Folk mini. We indeed have one of these mighty pinchers and even wrote about it, but we wanted a group of them, so we fired up our 3D printer and got to work!

Since this crabby foe takes up a 2×2 d20 set of squares and we’ve had some nice crab successes recently, DM Ben was happy to give this free DnD 3D print a paint.

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Large Shell P1: Layer FAN Pure Red.

Large Shell P2: Dark Tone Wash | then Red Tone Wash.

Large Shell P3: Stipple middle area with ASP Fire Drake.

Head/Inside Shell P1: Layer Citadel Contrast Snakebite Leather.

Head/Inside Shell P2: Drybrush white over the top to lighten it up.

Limbs: ASP Nuclear Sunrise + Orange Wash + Black dabs.

Feet: Black.

Very simple, right? We really liked dimming the middle of the shell and then doing some light edging (which sorta looked like scratches from previous battles).

DM Ben got a little experimental on the base, and that’s where things took a bit of a turn. For Pop’s day, DM Ben got the complete line of new Texture basing materials by Green Stuff World. And he really wanted to test a few of them out here.

He popped open their Aquatic Sea Foam Texture and their Beach Sand Ground Texture. The bummer here is that these products are so new that novice DM Ben didn’t have many video tutorials to go on, aside from GSW’s own promo vid. Still, he was feeling courageous and pressed ahead.

Now, we rarely experiment with new materials on freshly painted TTRPG miniatures, and even afterward, a few people on the team were like, “Ben! What were you thinking?!” That’s because we typically experiment on partially failed 3D prints or only on the separate base.

The biggest takeaway from these GSW base textures was “less is more!” Starting with the Beach Sand Texture, it went on a little light in color for us, so we went back with a drybrush of FAN Desert Yellow to darken some of the sand. For the really tricky seafoam, the trick is to put it on very sparingly and thin. Also, applying any of these materials with an old paintbrush works best. We’ll get better with practice.

Let’s finish up with a DnD 5e stat block for our newest 3D-printed monsters! There’s a darn good, out-of-the-box Crabfolk set of stats that made the numbers game here a snap: AC 16, HP 68, Speed 40 ft, multi-att: +6/1d6+4 & target is grappled (escape DC 14). Reach 10 ft.

Hence, DM Ben is thinking 3-4 of these hard-shelled warriors at a CR3 each for his six-member, sixth-level adventurers.

Now all that’s left to do is update our table and add another nifty on-decker for all your DnD monster needs.

Greetings, fellow Friday mutants! We don’t want to freak you out, but 2026 is nearly half over. How is that possible?! Never fret because we’ve got a fun, free download to make everything better. Let’s begin.

We weren’t even sure what we were looking at when one of our favorite 3D-print creators shared today’s free STL download back in April, but we love unique and intriguing monsters! Besides, why not, right? Part of the joy of our hobby is experimentation!

So, the monster in question today is called a Zaratan. DnD lore says, “it’s a colossal, island-sized sea turtle and ancient elemental. Famous for being mistaken for land, these ancient beasts can carry entire ecosystems on their backs. They are peaceful but possess devastating, earthquake-like combat capabilities when provoked.”

We’ve definitely seen this creature before, but never knew its name. In fact, one of our former uber-talented team members even 3D-printed and painted the original Loot Studios STL. Just epic.

Welp, turns out mz4250 wanted to join the fun, and he released a nifty Zaratan version of his own, but on a much, much more manageable scale. We’re digging this version. Don’t get us wrong, if you got the space and patience for those collasses miniatures, you are the man, man. We scaled this STL to a 2×2-ish d20-squared overall size so they’re gonna be lil’ Zaratan babies.

You’ll be glad to know that this lumbering beast is a breeze to 3D print and paint, so it’s quickly table-ready. DM Ben did so with ease.

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Body P1: Layer WAR Scaly Hide.

Body P2: Green Wash.

Body P3: Strong Tone Wash.

Body P4: Black light drybrush in shadow areas.

Mouth/Tongue: ASP Pastel Salmon.

Claws: FAN Uniform Grey.

Shell P1: Layer FAN Oak Brown.

Shell P2: Strong Tone Wash.

Shell P3: FAN Ancient Stone drybrush.

The body is the same nifty reptilian scheme we used on our earlier crocodiles. We’re pretty jazzed to adapt those colors to other lizard-like miniatures.

Now that we better understand the creature lore here, we’re gonna circle back and add some grass tufts and moss flock to its shell. Needs to be much more earthy. We’re also going to 3D-print another one and go for a more grayscale rock look, just so we can compare ’em.

Isn’t that tail just adorbs? Maybe not much if it swats you to next week when you get too close, though.

Now, let’s talk stats. Even the Gargantuan monstrosity is a bit intense for the 5E stats: AC 25 and HP 507 (26d20 + 234). Hence, DM Ben is thinking something more along these lines, but then Google suggested a Hatchling version!

AC: 17, HP 90, Speed 20 ft/swim 40 ft.

STR 18 (+4), Dex 10, Con 15 (+2), Int 2 (-4), WIS 12 (+1), CHA 8 (-1)

Resistances: Fire, Lightning, Bludgeoning, Piercing, Slashing, Non-magical

Vulnerabilities: Thunder.

Immunities: Poisoned, Frightened.

Fortified Shell: minimum damage of 10 unless head/feet are targeted

Mutiattack: Bite +7/2d6+4 piercing. Grappled on it/DC 14 to escape.

We think this is perfect for our party of six, sixth-level adventurers…especially as a pack of two. The players will probably have to provoke them or enter the shallow waters they occupy (within a certain radius, like 20 or 30 feet).

Until next time!

Greetings, fellow groggy gamers! Did you have a little too much fun this last jam-packed weekend?! We sure did, but thankfully, we snuck in some DnD mini painting. Let’s go!

As longtime 3DRPGers know, our offices are located in sunny Chandler, AZ. We’re nestled in a great spot because concerts are always reasonable drives, no matter the venue. Several of us were fortunate enough to see Ed Sheeran and his insane Loop Tour, which kicked off in Glendale, AZ this past Saturday night. Despite being pretty tuckered by the time we finally got home from his 2.5-hour show, we somehow got some TTRPG hobby time in, so let’s see what came off DM Ben’s hobby desk.

Let’s start with this Myconid Druid by Brite Minis. This nifty STL is from their bargain monthly Patreon. We showcased a new spot in our DnD campaign that includes traveling through treacherous Mushroom Alley. We already made some pretty awesome monster minis, but honestly, can you ever really have enough of these saucey shrooms?

DM Ben had no problem painting these druidic warriors as the paint areas didn’t have any tiny details or hard-to-reach areas. Mushroom miniatures in general also share a lot of common core colors.

Prime Flat Black | Slapcop Base.

Head: ASP Pallid Bone.

Eyes: FAN Matt White.

Body P1: Layer ASP Rigor Mortis.

Body P2: Drybrush P3 Menoth Highlight.

Body P3: Soft Tone Wash.

Staff: GSW Skeleton Brown.

Small Staff Mushrooms: FAN Dragon Red + Red Wash.

Flock is the key here. Randomly place some green moss on the head, add a grass tuft, and sprinkle on some ground cover. Simple, right?!

Next up, we 3D printed this mysterious DnD Guild Mage by the talented Dutchmogul. We’re only featuring one of these free five TTRPG sculpts, as DM Ben wanted to ensure he could paint them properly. This RPG miniature came out so well that we’re definitely going to run off the other four minis and make this a full monster grouping.

This was an especially fun miniature to paint because we were dying to try out a new green color from one of Miniature Hobbyist’s recent tutorials. He’s one of 3D-print painter heroes and just a good dude.

Here’s the paint steps DM Ben tried:

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Hood: Citadel Contrast Garaghak’s Sewer.

Staff: GSW Skeleton Brown.

Staff Top: FAN Magecast Magenta.

Staff Edging: FAN Enchanted Pink.

Cape P1: Layer ASP Charming Chartreuse

Cape P2: Lightly Stipple a little bit of black in shadow areas.

Cape P3: Edge FAN Leafy Green

Hands: ASP Crusade Skin.

Soft Tone Wash.

This guy will be a perfect NPC while traveling deep in The High Forest. When we finish off the other four of this set, we’ll set this up as a Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster DnD encounter table. More to come!

Until next time!
