DM Ben always, always wants more NPCs to pull from our display cases, so he’s pretty excited about today’s featured DnD 3D-print blog post, as we think these latest two are gonna be darn fun to play. Information is critical in DnD, and you need sources to get it from without being known.

We think a Hovertrain station is an ideal map designation to have plenty of new DnD one-shot encounters. This hustling and bustling locale is ideal for such TTRPG shenanigans, right? Plenty of quirky and mysterious characters coming and going from Waterdeep’s amazing new transportation hub. And your adventurers certainly need some reliable moles or two on their payroll.

First, we needed to make some slick DnD terrain to represent our grand central station, lovingly named Ocean View Station. Aether Studios has all the nifty tiles you need to build a simple setup like the one above, and even better, their Ridivi Station set is totally modular so you can reconfigure different layouts as needed. We really enjoyed 3D printing and spotlighting this build for y’all.

One of our least favorite parts of this DnD blog is figuring out where all our glorious 3D prints come from whenever we do a new post. The reason is that there is often a significant delay between buying the STLs, printing them, painting them, and finally featuring them on 3DRPGPrints.com. Like, that progression can take 12+ months to complete. Crazy, right?

So, the Interwebs says our two STLs today are by DavidLann3D, but it also says he and Iain Lovecraft have some sort of merchant licensing agreement, so it’s hard to tell who the original maker is. Seems like these are DavidLann3D. We just don’t recall ever buying his work or his Folksheim Kickstarter. Oh well, all the links above will lead you to today’s files (and some really other cool ones).

Let’s start with this eccentric Organ Grinder. You probably noticed in the rendering above that this street busker even comes with a little dancing monkey wearing a gnome’s clothing. Adorbs. That element was a bit too fragile for us, so we left it off the final overall miniature.

Resident painter Kimmy Utah was our lead colorist on both pieces, and we just think she did a marvelous job. His fancy dark clothing pairs perfectly with his colorful red organ grinder and tip jar.

Our second busking miniature is this Baker. While music is a natural street hustle in any mass transportation environment, travelers gotta eat, right? So why not have a chap going up and down the Hovertrain platform selling piping hot, fresh bread to ticket goers as they get ready to board the train (or are getting off at this stop)? But some say those services are just a cover to sell spy information to others about who is getting on and off The Forgotten Rails.

We wanted to include a backside picture here as we love the all-around details of these two new DnD 3D-printed miniatures. Kimmy Utah even did some free-hand cobblestone-style bases for us, too. She’s just the best.

One thing that’s always amazed us about historic Egyptian tombs is all the captivating hieroglyphics on the walls and pillars, often still in surprisingly good condition. So, DM Ben thinks it’s an important immersion point to include these mysterious ruins within our sacred resting places beneath the sands.

And if it’s one thing you don’t have to search too far for, it’s these types of word-stuffed scatter terrain. Aether Studios is still the Pharaoh of all Pharoes for its hieroglyphic pieces, but we wanted to share some others as well.

So, let’s start with Cast n Play and their fun collection of Temple pillars from their sick Interiors Vol II Kickstarter. We’re showing off the middle one as we love those little shelves within the pillar. Sorta reminds us of Game of Thrones’ House of Black and White, the temple of the Faceless Man.

We also wanted to try our earlier ivory color scheme on something bigger than statues. These steps are easy-breezy, and we wanted a few columns in our scatter terrain desert arsenal to be of the fanciest kind.

• Heavy Drybrush of FAN Brainmatter Beige (or FAN Ancient Stone).
• Wavy Edging Lines of Ash Grey 1:3 parts water (on flat parts).

If your first pass ends up too light or too dark, you just re-apply one of those steps til your DnD 3D print is just right. We did this one in FDM, and there was a little inadvertent stringing but no big whoop.

Next up is this mighty Egyptian monument by Iain Lovecraft. This ode to the Gods is from his wonderful Desert Adventures Kickstarter. This one is just a treasure trove of large and small scatter terrain as well as unique miniatures for your sand-themed campaign.

For the history buffs, the god in this statue is Lamassu (or Shedu) from Assyrian and Mesopotamian mythology. In ancient Mesopotamian culture, colossal stone statues of Lamassu were placed at palace gates and city entrances to ward off evil. Wicked cool.

The default size of this STL is insane in the membrane. Like many in our beloved hobby, we are always fighting for storage space, so to keep things manageable, we went with a 2-wide by 4-long d20 squares. DM Ben sees the party discover this one, half-buried in sand, as the group gets closer to the actual tomb.

The party wizard could use comprehend languages to reveal an ominous warning from the stone inscription. DM Ben could print this out, and then if they decipher the ancient hieroglyphics, the group could read this stone-cold warning. Fun, right?!

Lastly, here’s a quick shot of each completed piece next to a traditional d20 miniature. Imposing without being too obnoxious, yet still making a statement to the group.

Today, we’re going to share a couple of miniatures and one piece of sandy scatter that are now official role players in our beloved Beneath the Sands ongoing DnD blog series. DM Ben is mustering up a lot of courage lately and doing his novice best to color some of our 3D prints, as Resident Painter Kimmy Utah has been absolutely slammed with almost a 12-month backlog in front of her.

So, it’s important to remind readers that 3DRPGPrints.com by no means represents itself as a professional, award-winning painting blog. We’re just a small group of passionate guys and gals who want to share our RPG stuff with fellow gamers and help grow the DnD community. We fully believe in the Arm’s Length Rule and in getting TTRPG 3D prints to the game table ASAP so we can enjoy them! Making stuff just to sit in display cases is a bit boring to us.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s see what new miniatures and scatter might deserve a slot in your own ongoing DnD campaigns. We’ll start with the mighty Schlossbauer and his free Egyptian-style priest download. This mini is officially labeled an Agahim, but all we see is a desert badass.

This is the smallest DnD miniature ol’ DM Ben has ever tried to hand-paint! Later, he said it felt like he was defusing a ticking package. We’re ultra-zoomed in on this photo, so the final output is deceiving here. He got nothing but highfives from the office crew, simply because he didn’t let fear get the best of him.

Surprisingly, we had very few Priest miniatures for Beneath the Sands, and these dudes would be all over a sunken tomb. A bigshot Pharaoh always has an abundance of faith fellas at his side (probably because of all the bad stuff they’ve done as rulers).

We plan to make four more of these guys (shhh – don’t tell DM Ben), and tweaking that Veil Jewel color will be a nice differential. A thin, sandy base also turned out swell here.

Next up is this wicked good carpet seller by EC3D Designs! He’s from their epic Scorching Sands Kickstarter, and it’s pretty safe to say that we probably won’t stop 3D printing everything from this sandy set until we’ve basically sliced ’em all. You might be wondering, how useful is this sitting vendor going to be in a tomb raider campaign? Oh, don’t fret – we have some ideas!

You can probably tell this is an older 3D print by those old-school FDM layer lines. We started with just a Prusa Mini printer and only later added a glorious Resin printer. Again, from a sitting distance, you don’t notice them at all. Kimmy Utah colored this guy up, and she did an excellent job. The lighter blue mixed with white, and those sassy red shoes are a home run.

DM Ben is going to install our newfound friend on the market streets of the nearest city near their first tomb exploration. For a reasonable amount of coin, he’s going to be an ongoing, valuable source of intelligence to the party. The players need as many details as possible before ascending into a dark and dangerous place. These sorts of shadhy NPCs keep the game moving, especially for a game group that craves more session combat and less chatter.

Lastly, we finish with a simple but necessary scatter terrain piece by Iain Lovecraft. This 3D print is from his delightful Desert Sands Kickstarter. You truly cannot have enough God statues in your tombs. Those guys were obsessed with the higher powers that be. Ancient Egyptians worshipped between 1,400 and 2,000 gods and goddesses throughout their 3,000-year history. That’s just bonkers.

We did this one in our darker craft-paint scheme, and we’re pretty happy with how this desert scatter terrain piece turned out. Since this one is on the smaller side, it makes sense that it would be inside the tomb. We really should 3D print a second one, though, as these would look especially cool if they flanked an important inner tomb doorway.

How many of these dastardly weapon wielders have you 3D printed so far? Hopefully, many because we aren’t stopping anytime soon!

Let’s start with a creator who knows a thing or two about nasty marauders and STLs. Cast n Play has released two pretty amazing pirate series, including their Pirate Chronicles set and, most recently, their Shattered Sea set. It’s pretty much inevitable that we’ll end up 3D printing nearly all of them. This particular ankle-biter is a Goblin Captain.

The Lord of the Rings movies (and even the Prime Series) mean Goblins will always be a fav amongst the 3DRPG crew. Hence, this is one of our favorites. Resident painter Kimmy Utah was our chief colorist here, and we love her palette selection: perfect dark green skin and a flowing blue cap, all resting on a custom pirate plank surface. Don’t mess with this little guy unless you want a blade up your nose.

Next up, we’ve got a pair of pirates from the talented Iain Lovecraft and his spectacular Rum and Raising Kickstarter. These two swashbucklers are from the Core Miniatures portion of that bountiful STL release. This set also includes some slick DnD scatter terrain and some amazing buildings. Definitely worth a look for your hungry 3D printer.

This ripped fella is all bitness and is in no mood to talk. His mighty Cutless answers any and all questions. Kimmy Utah also painted both of these miniatures, so she cornered the paintbrush applications for today’s post. We love how she went with a classic garb look and then accented everything with gold bracers, a great hat, and a necklace filled with stories.

Lastly, we gotta finish it off with a pegleg Pete here! Come on, what’s not to love! He’s gotta great hat, a quickshot weapon, plenty of ammo, and a trench coat that we all want on our shoulders. Even that epic beard is giving us all the feels.

Both of our featured 3D prints are by the immensely talented Iain Lovecraft and his must-own Rum and Raising Kickstarter. This TTRPG set has it all: amazing miniatures, gorgeous buildings, and fun scatter terrain pieces. This pirate lookout is from their core set of DnD minis.

The second featured DnD miniature is also from the Kickstarter’s core set and has all the necessary STL elements: a monkey, a bag of cannonballs, and a big, burly dude carrying it all on his back! What’s not to love here?

Resident Painter Kimmy Utah was the captain of color on these two fab pirate miniatures, and she just crushed her assignment as usual. Her attention to detail is beyond words. Case in point, notice how she did the wooden floors on the bases? Fun fact: Shipbuilding back in the day included planks that were fastened with wooden pegs (called trunnels or treenails for short). When they were pounded into place with a mallet, it would create a tight friction fit, locking them in place. That sorta two peg pattern is historically accurate and darn cool.

Now, let’s get to the particulars:

It’s one thing to whip up a new dengeon crawl our wilderness trek, but a true tomb raid takes much more mental energy…and resin. You can’t just really reach over and grab a mitful of Egyptian miniatures. Well, fret not, treasure seekers. We got ya covered.

Let’s kick the stone running with a couple of featured scatter terrain pieces of the most god-lovin’ kind. Egyptians weren’t really for putting all their prayers in one basket, so tribute came in many forms. Hence why we’re trying to give DM Ben plenty of tomb decor for all his room-building needs. Our first piece, Glorious Kebechet (aka the “Protector of the Dead”), is by Aether Studios and is from their must-print Throne Room set.

Next is another DnD statue by Iain Lovecraft and his exceptional Desert Adventures Kickstarter. We’ve featured nearly all of the STLs from this statue subset, and they’re just so well done. Details abound, baby!

DM Ben colored these up using our somewhat darker sand paint scheme. He also wanted to do one in solid black and put a varnish over it so it would be shinier. These should fit nicely into various rooms inside your tomb or even in a Pharaoh’s palace dungeon crawl.

We’ll conclude our DnD day with another heavy-hitting pyramid guard that will guard your tomb’s treasures for all of eternity. This magnificent TTRPG STL is by Dungeon Classics. Sure, it’s labeled a Clay Golem, but who says you have to paint this RPG miniature to its precise file name?!

That’s one of the things that is so darn cool about our 3D printing hobby. You can put your own spin on any print simply by picking different color combinations. Let’s take a quick look at the paints DM Ben used for his new Tomb muscle.

Longtime 3DRPG readers know DM Ben always requests a monster squad of around five miniatures every time we run some new baddies on our 3D printer. Nothing frustrates him more than when we pass him a single brand-new, kick-arse miniature. He’s like, “So you just want to roll over the Tomb crawl, ey? Why not just print out a baby duck and have you guys fight that?”

Even though DM Ben didn’t paint this TTRPG miniature like an actual Clay Golem, he’s leaning towards using their bruising stats: AC 14, HP 133, Att x2: +8/2d10+5 damage, Berserk, Magic Resistance & Haste. Depending on the party’s level, it’s unlikely the DM would ever throw more than four of these mighty mights in a battle, but they would definitely be guarding a very high-value area.

There’s great Dungeon Master flexibility here, too. We don’t have to utilize all these bad Buccaneers at once. We can gradually introduce them to certain scenarios. Or, we can replace fallen comrades from previous battles. Or, we always have a new NPC within arm’s length. Or, we can even save some just for certain types of DnD scenarios: Hovertrains or ships at sea.

Today, we’re adding two more pirates that represent the greedy nature of the ransacking biz. Privateers are natural gold hounds, so we need some more 3D prints to represent that lust for wealth. We also already came up with several go-to RPG gambling games, so let’s make sure we get some pirates seated at the betting table. Griffon’s Wall is our group’s fav – basically, a form of blackjack but with dice (so fun)!

Our first featured raider is by Iain Lovecraft and hails from his must-own Rum and Raising Kickstarter. This release is stuffed with all sorts of great pirate choices, so we expect to keep releasing ’em from this set as fast as Kimmy Utah can paint ’em.

Kim’s color choices here are spot on, with that classic red being a staple of traditional pirate garb. Her details on the playing cards and dice are shocking to say the least. Besides, who doesn’t love a good blue sash accessory?

Now, let’s get to the particulars:

We have one more plunderer to add to the crew, and this time, we get to grab a goblin from the shelf. 3DRPG Studios is all about inclusion and fair hiring practices, so we absolutely need a diverse crew. Sadly, we just couldn’t pin down a source here, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. We ran it by all the maker Discord servers and searched Google Images a hundred times, but alas, no joy. It happens. Still, if we had to guess, we think it’s an old Reaper miniature we got in a Dungeon Crate box.

Longtime readers will know we’ve built up quite the crew of pillaging misfits to date. And that homebrewed DnD content will be especially useful, as we can use these pirates for either Hovertrain duty and ship service. However, we probably need to be a bit careful with our “Pirates Wanted” phrasing, as that request can be taken a couple of ways.

We’ve got a literal STL treasure chest of all things pirates, thanks to Iain Lovecraft’s fantastic Rum and Raising Kickstarter. We can’t wait to show you all these new 3D prints. Why? Because of course, everything is better with pirates! While the included buildings are truly remarkable (like the Captain’s Cabin and the Merchant’s Abode), it’s the TTRPG miniatures that really sing for this Kickstarter.

Resident Painter Kimmy Utah was the lead colorist for these two troublemaker miniatures! Let’s start with a classic pirate stance if we ever saw one! This ale guzzler is loaded for bear and naturally has an itchy trigger finger.

Now, let’s get to the particulars:

He’s normally a very skilled shot and is called in to take out key targets, but sometimes it takes a few pirate pistols to get the job done because he has a hard time putting down his coveted ale mug.

Lastly, what’s Mighty Crew of Marauders without a ripped fella swinging a large grappling hook to latch onto the other disabled vessel? Pulling alongside an incapacitated craft and preventing it from drifting away is a big deal.

While there are no official rules for using a grappling hook in DnD 5e, DMs often use a system where it’s a simple improvised weapon or a tool for climbing. The Google lists some helpful common homebrew rules, including using a DC 13 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check to throw the hefty hook to catch an object within 50 feet, and then using a Strength (Athletics) DC 13 check to pull a creature or yourself.

So, a hearty raise of the mug to Kimmy Utah for her amazing pirate paint jobs. We can’t wait to show you even more of her work, so keep growing our mighty Freebooter army.

There wasn’t just one pyramid ever made, right? Many stunning tombs were constructed to house fallen Egyptian kings, their royal families, and their priests, among other notable individuals. Even the wealthy elite would forge their own fancy resting places (on a smaller scale, of course) to house all their wealth for the afterlife. Hence, our reasons for showcasing another tomb after our previous version.

Besides, we’re not putting in all this 3D-printing elbow grease to simply put down the same 3D-printed building over and over again. That blasé repetition will dampen the gametable vibe rather than enhance it. We only share STL files that we’ve fully printed and painted ourselves, so if you see it on our little ol’ 3DRPG DnD blog, you know it’s good.

Thankfully, there are several Egyptian enthusiast creators who understand our RPG perspective and want to ensure we have plenty of scatter terrain options. Iain Lovecraft’s jampacked Desert Adventures Kickstarter comes with several Tomb STLs, and today we’re going to share the above-ground version.

We stuck with our core, tried-and-true three-step sandy paint scheme, as it looks especially good on building scatter terrain (and our terrain tiles). We still prefer the darker version on smaller scatter pieces. We used Pokorny Paint Deep Lava as a random drybrush on the statues and urns to add to the overall weathering effect. We’re going to circle back and touch up those two stone pieces in the very front steps and add a little GSW Turquoise Ghost Dipping Ink to ’em since that looked so darn good on a recently completed piece.

Sadly, for whatever reason, we’re unable to locate our interior images, so we’ll have to show you the tomb’s innards via the artist’s rendering. What we especially like is the cool trap door opening that indicates your next movements are down…and down. You’re basically 3D-printing just two pieces: the core main piece and its roof (for this particular setup). Everything came out swell in FDM for us.

Besides our newest Tomb building, we wanted to showcase a couple more minor pieces. The first are these Giant Tropical Plants by Fantastic Plants and Rocks. Egypt is renowned for its diverse array of tropical plants, particularly in the Nile Valley and Delta regions. So, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to include a few of these in your overall desert terrain library. These may not appear in the middle of a vast desert, but they could certainly be found in more populous cities.

DM Ben liked these because they felt rather oasis-esque to him. Army Painter Speedpaints have several wonderful greenish plant options, including two of our favs: Forest Sprite and Ghillie Dew. We used a simple brown for the plant roots and then added a little smattering of yellow drybrushing here for sand-sake.

We’ll close this latest weekly edition of Tomb Thursday with this fun planter scatter terrain piece. This 3D print is also from Iain Lovecraft’s Desert Adventures Kickstarter (and the Plants 1 subset). This will likely be placed in one of the nicer rooms.

DM Ben wants to introduce some contrasting green colors into these gameboards to lighten things up a bit, as the heavy use of our core sand colors can be overwhelming on the eyes at times.

We’re actually making some headway on all our Egyptian monuments, including amazing obelisks, columns, physical tombs, and building block scatter terrain. Feels good, man. So, DM Ben wanted to keep that 3D-printing momentum going with a few more fun additions today.

Obviously, Egyptians were deeply devoted to their tributes to the gods. These belief-bound people had monuments and statues at every single turn. Their infatuation with the afterlife was obsessive, to say the least. So, our Egyptian Tomb needs these critical scatter terrain pieces to stay true to the history, not to mention that the whole thing is just frickin’ cool.

Today’s featured 3D prints come courtesy of Iain Lovecraft’s awesome Desert Adventures Kickstarter. We keep going back to it because there’s just a plethora of beautifully designed STLs. You can tell the creator put his heart and soul into this one, all in the name of great TTRPG gaming.

Some of these pieces default to quite large sizes, so we’ve scaled a few of them down a notch, as our game table isn’t the size of a United States Navy Aircraft Carrier’s flight deck.

Let’s start with this classic Egyptian statue. They’re are eight different versions to choose from in the core set, and it’s inevitable that we will show off most of them before this tremendous Tomb Thursday series ever concludes. We opted for our lighter sand smattering paint scheme here because we wanted these to appear a little weathered.

We added a miniature to the original picture above so you can get a better sense of scale. This one essentially occupies a 2×2 d20 square, which is the perfect size for us. The paint scheme especially shines from the sideview shot. DM Ben inadvertently smudged the eyes a tad, so he might go back and correct that minor detail. Still, we love this final DnD Egyptian scatter terrain piece.

Let’s conclude with this insanely good Dark Throne. DM Ben was a little spooked about painting this one, but we pulled down several photos from Google that showed what this monument might have looked like in the past. Those reference images helped a ton. One image included this really neat opaque, blue-to-green gemstone color, and we instantly fell in love with it. Thankfully, GSW Turquoise Ghost Dipping Ink was a perfect match here.

The set included two versions: the entire face of a mighty Pharaoh, and then an intense, half-skeletal face option. We started with the core STL, but that half-and-half version from the render above is really starting to grow on us, so we’re going to have to send that one to our Prusa 3D printer soon.

The default size of this one is quite large, so we scaled it down a few notches to avoid consuming our valuable game table space. Our version takes up 2×3 d20 squares, and it’s still quite imposing to the first-time tomb raider. DM Ben expects to put this one in one of the main Pharaoh chambers.

We’re still in love with Dwarven Forge’s Lava Pokorney Paint as a spot drybrush effect. We accidentally stumbled into this paint choice, and now we can’t get enough of it. This photo is taken from the back, but it shows that this mighty monument doesn’t necessarily have to be positioned against a wall. It could easily rest in the center of a room.

Two more imposing statues join the scatter terrain club. Good Dungeon Master livin’ for sure, right?!
