Hope everyone had a swell holiday! The 3DRPG went into ultra chill mode, but ol’ DM Ben was a 3D-printing and painting machine for thee, so let’s get into the swing of things (pun intended)!

We haven’t done a Kinda Sorta Portal random table entry in a while, and even though we just did a jungle one-shot, these damn dirty 3D-print apes have been staring us in the face for months now! Besides, we think you’ll go bananas over these free STLs.

Our master maker is good ol’ mz4250, an absolute staple in our wondrous 3D printing community. He offers a Patreon but also releases all his weekly STLs for free. His library is gigantic, and we’ve lost count of the number of pieces we’ve printed over the years. We’re also going to feature another ape from Brite Minis because batch painting is the way.

For the overall paint jobs, we used a great painting tutorial by Miniature Hobbyist. We can’t always get our stuff to match his brilliant work, but he’s inspiring nonetheless (and also calls out every specific paint he uses). Be sure to check out his marvelous channel. Additionally, we admire the modern apes in the modern Planet of the Apes movies, particularly their menacing faces, so that’s the vibe we decided to emulate here.

Let’s start with Brite Minis and their fantastic Gorilla miniature. We print their dollar-value Patreon releases without fail. Supportless and fun as all get out! Additionally, they’re usually all-in-one prints and feature fun bases (like the stone one shown here).

Not sure why we only have a group pic of him here, but the Brite miniature is the one on the left. The other fella is a mz4250 piece who is a little smaller than we like, so we’re not planning on doing more of our weapon-toting White Ape.

Next up is adorably titled “Ape Riding Ape Enjoying Life” with a sculpt that’s tough to beat. DM Ben loves monsters with multiple attacks (especially with larger parties) because he could technically get in ten attacks here (eight claws and two bites). Now, the standard DnD 5e Ape usually only gets two fist attacks, but you’re the DM, make it a fury of blows!

Next up is another mz4250 monstrosity – the Giant Ape, but that name might not fit because we can’t recall if we sized this one down during slicing. Oh well, what’s in a name anyway? We love the design here because you can feel this guy just bearing down on you during a jungle chase.

Last but not least, we have a mighty Gorillion who has an imposing face that just can’t be beat. Five nasty attacks coming off this anger management primate, so again, as a DM, what’s not to love? He doesn’t exactly look like he wants ya to come in for a hug.

With our booming Aether Studios’ Aztec jungle monuments at the ready, you now have two tropical forest scenarios from our random table to choose from on the dice. Our last entry focused on porting right into a mysterious warrior tribe, but if you’re not a fan of that story angle, now you can just go ape!

DM Ben suggests keeping this one simple and having your players teleport into an ape habitat, where, at first, they don’t even notice the party (due to the thick surrounding vegetation). However, they quickly pick up the scent, and all heck breaks loose!

Let’s piggyback on our earlier desert sand paint test and see how we applied the runner-up color scheme to some nifty new tropical forest scatter terrain by Aether Studios!

So, how on earth do we get a color jungle paint scheme from a desert sand scheme attempt? Seems absurd. Well, we’re calling it as a huge win, but even in our latest test, there were new lessons to be learned.

Remember, we tried two paint schemes: one with fancy Reaper paints and another with more affordable craft paints. See how much darker the test tiles are here? You really get that Aztec rain forest vibe, right? That’s because we start with a base coat of Apple Barrel Brown — a dark color on top of flat black primer.

The key, though, is that the two follow-up colors (Apple Barrel Dark Yellow and Vanilla) were applied with the lightest of drybrush strokes. If you get too heavy-handed with those last two steps, you will lose that desired Inca-style feel.

First, let’s share the STLs we used for this jungle paint test. These slick Monument Markers are the fab work of Aether Studios. The set comes with three fun domain marker variations: regular, damaged, and vines.

We had to twist DM Ben’s arm to show these painted pieces because he knows he went too heavy on the last two drybrush steps. However, 3DRPG’s motto is “fail fast, learn fast.” It’s essential to share where we took a bad turn so that others can avoid wasting valuable hobby time by learning from our mistakes.

Also, we added a fourth color step by adding a spotty moss effect. We used Pokorny Paint’s Moss Green. We just did some quick-hit dabs on these 3D prints and love how that effect turned out. It’s not that we hate this paint job, but we know we can do a bit better on the next batch.

For $hit and giggles, we also tried a much smaller 2×2 d20 size, and well, that wasn’t a good call either. Pretty funny, actually, but not something we would do again. Still, we started our paint attempts on these smaller versions, but we are definitely going to 3D-print the original sizes for the Vine STLs.

Now, the question is, how can we use these excellent scatter terrain pieces in our DnD game? We’re not quite ready to build a whole jungle terrain gameboard, but we can do a limited one-shot thanks to our Kinda Sorta Portal series!

As a refresher, DM Ben created a Kinda Sorta Portal for the players to jump back to their home base, regardless of their current coordinates. The only drawback is that the Portal is somewhat unpredictable and doesn’t always direct players where they want to go.

There’s a 30% chance that when the players activate the Kinda Sorta Portal, they’ll temporarily end up in an undisclosed location. So, why not have the group inadvertently vamp into the middle of a dense jungle and between these new mighty monuments?!

The gameboard setup is a snap. Plop down a green gamemat, these sacred monuments, and then a few dense jungle plants (like these from Fantastic Plants & Rocks). DM Ben also plans to add some jungle Jumanji drum sound effects to complete the immersion.

For the miniatures, you can’t go wrong with these intense Tribal Warriors by EC3D Designs. These supportless DnD minis come with and without masks and are from their incredible Depths of Savage Atoll Kickstarter! These slick STLs haven’t been passed to Resident Painter Kimmy Utah, but we plan on passing them to her soon.

We’ll utilize the DnD 5e Tribal Warrior stat block: AC 12, HP 11, +3 att/1d8+1. Most importantly, Pack Tactics gives a warrior advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the warrior’s allies is within 5 ft. DM Ben plans to surround the group and have numerous spear throwers hidden within the thick vegetation.

A great thread on Reddit has some more suggestions, like adding a Berserker (AC 13, HP 67, +5 attack/1d12+3) to the warrior band. Even better, you could have the tribal warriors run away after a few rounds because they just spotted some wild tigers (AC 12, HP 37, +5 att/1d10+3) getting ready to pounce!

Now, all that’s left to do is update our Kinda Sorta Portal table! We’re trying to get to a d10 random roll sooner rather than later, and we’re getting energized to add two more!

Do you know what the problem is for most calendars? They become useless over time. Not so fast, says Loke Battle Mats! Let’s see why!

Gamers don’t want dull calendars on their walls. They want something with a little flair that reminds them that their next sesh is happening sooner rather than later! Right?!

Enter Loke Battle Mats and their Calendar of Many Adventures. It’s been a favorite in our annual Holiday Gift Guide for two years running. The 2025 calendar includes 12 maps and 12 5e adventures for levels 3-9, with plenty of great artwork.

Loke Battle Mats was kind enough to send us a 2025 Calendar so we could kick the tires and see if this one is as good as 2024 (which was excellent btw). We kept our initial Investigation Check simple and flipped to January for its monthly adventure!

Each setting has everything you need: the map, the adventure hook, detailed encounters, monster stats, item stats, and what might be next after the mini-adventure is played.

The adventure, called “An Unquiet Night”, is an eleven-page PDF that you download via a QR code right on the calendar. All 12 adventures are also in a zip file with a PDF for each month of the year. Even better, you can sync it all up on DriveThruRPG.com. We might even laminate a few of our favs.

Each adventure is well-written and organized, with DMs having zero problems running a one-game for the evening. Check out our setup below.

With the adventure in hand, the next step was to set it up for actual gameplay. You certainly don’t have to place down specific miniatures and scatter terrain, but come on, this is 3DRPG. The setting here is simple enough – a campsite within some ruins.

We set our map down and started pondering what DnD pieces we’d pull from our joyous TTRPG collection to make the map look even cooler and more engaging for the players. Here, we determine we need to find some outdoor-ish 3D prints like tents, a campfire, some wall ruins, etc.

This setting was right up our alley! We pulled some slick tents, a cooking campfire, a few bedrolls, some accent logs, and even a fresh grave (maybe from a recently fallen comrade), which fit on the Loke Battle Mats map perfectly. Looks pretty great, right?!

For the monsters, ghosts were an easy miniature to grab. We purchased some really cool metal miniatures out of a value box at Gen Con many moons ago. Pretty darn cool, right?!

And just like that, you can be done with all your Dungeon Master prep and put on an engaging, quick game after a weekend dinner with some game buds. All this from a handy DnD calendar, twelve different times for $20 (now $9.99) – count us in!

Lastly, we’re all about value and reusability here at 3DRPG Studios, so we’ll take this excellent premade adventure and turn it into one of our Kinda Sorta Portal table entries. Loke Battle Mats already helped us last time with their Coast of Dread Adventure Box, so we’ll happily add another from their 2025 Calendar.

Our players will inadvertently teleport to this mysterious campsite only to learn it’s not actually ghosts attacking some snoozing adventurers. Instead, the Spirits themselves are the ones doing the camping! Our three doomed ghosts are none too happy with the uninvited guests and will demand that everyone roll for initiative.

Now, all that’s left to do is update our Kinda Sorta Portal table, which is a mix of dangerous and potentially more passive encounters.

Here we go again with our fifth Kinda Sorta Portal entry, and this time, we’ve got a much-needed Dungeon Master assist from Loke Battle Mats!

We’re really embracing the idea of adding a Bastion to our DnD campaigns so that our players can enjoy building their own space from the ground up. A key element is ensuring that the group can transport back to their new digs without it being such a painful journey to return.

Everything in Dungeons & Dragons is fraught with peril, so we had to at least make their magical teleportation device “interesting.” The risk is in the portal’s name – there’s always a 30% chance the device doesn’t work as expected.

Ultimately, DM Ben wants to build a Kinda Sorta Portal random table with twenty different entries for those times the group bumbles their dice percent roll. Building all those different scenarios is no easy task, but thankfully, we just got our hands on the Loke Battle Mats Coast of Dread Adventure Box and all its mapping goodness!

There are 24 double-sided maps for Dungeon Masters to use in a myriad of situations. Getting terrain printed, painted, and set up in addition to its miniatures and scatter terrain can be really overwhelming at times. So, it’s incredibly handy to just pull out a map and cut that prep time down considerably (especially if you’re traveling to someone else’s house to play).

How might you use Loke Battle Mats Coast of Dread Adventure Box, you ask? Well, we decided to put their DnD product to the test using our Kinda Sorta Portal random table. DM Ben wants the group to inadvertently teleport to a castle’s grand archive room and come face-to-face with its master librarian – Archibald Bookman.

So, we started flipping through the double-sided, laminated maps to see if one fit the encounter mold here. Loke Battle Mats even includes various roofs that you can use to cover certain buildings and conceal their contents. You can tell veteran gamers worked on these assets.

Sure enough, they included a great hall map with decorative flooring. It’s perfect. As one walks around and explores the grand archive’s contents, you can practically hear the echoing footsteps. Can 3DRPG print this type of floor terrain? Absolutely. However, we were focused on creating all its scatter terrain, so now we get the best of both worlds. Plus, the map just looks fantastic with our 3D Printed terrain on it!

When our players unexpectedly teleport into this great hall, they will spot a single floating wizard slowly flipping through a large book on a pedestal. In the spirit of Ghostbusters, he will turn to the group completely unfazed and respond with a “Shhhhhh.” DM Ben loves slipping in iconic movie references, especially because the younger players usually have no idea what he is talking about.

Our arcane librarian will ultimately come unhinged if the players…

Talk loudly

Take a book off the shelf

Get too close to him

Thus, a player’s best move here is to remain perfectly still and quiet until they can jump back into the Kinda Sorta Portal. Our mysterious librarian will use the DnD 5e Lich stat block (but without insane spells like Finger of Death).

If the group decides that being still and quiet is their best option, DM Ben will ask for a group stealth check. If they fail, the librarian becomes enraged and gives an imposing warning. If curiosity gets the best of them and they fail again, then it’s combat time.

Now, all that’s left to do is update our Kinda Sorta Portal table, which is a mix of dangerous and potentially more passive encounters.

Today, we have a slick new scatter terrain pierce that will get some double-duty playtime in our DnD campaigns, and hopefully, we can convince you to add this fun Taxidermist Display 3D print to your game, too!

The thrill of victory has always been celebrated in Dungeons and Dragons. Rightfully so, your character takes pride in all those monsters he/she has struck down, so it’s only natural to keep a few trophies at your home base. It’s really no different than a flying ace painting his tallies on his WWII airplane, right?

Our featured 3D print is the Taxidermist Display by STL Miniatures. This trophy wall comes from their terrific Taxidermist Set, which was part of the NPCs Fantasy 2 Kickstarter (which, by the way, has silly good value). A year later, we’re still printing files from it!

Resident painter Kimmy Utah applied her color skills to this TTRPG scatter terrain piece. We’re thrilled with the results, especially because this 3D print contains numerous tiny, tucked-away elements. It was definitely not a piece novice painter DM Ben and his older eyes could handle well. Funny story: She actually painted this one twice for us. We re-printed it because our initial output contained a few self-induced errors.

Probably the main reason we adore this Taxidermist Display STL is because of all the buzz it will generate when the players first encounter it (with no one around initially)! Who took down all these mighty beasts? What’s written in those books and scrolls (stories of each kill, perhaps)? What did the hunter use to take down each prey? Your DM will have a field day here.

Next, let’s discuss how we plan to use this mighty scatter terrain 3D print. As we mentioned earlier, our newly completed Taxidermist Display will be part of our Kinda Sorta Portal series and our Forgotten Rails Wandering Monster table. Allow us to elaborate.

We’ll start with the Kinda Sorta Portal. It’s a magical teleportation device that works…well, most of the time. DM Ben created the homebrew magic item because he wanted his players to have an easier way to occasionally get back to home base. The portal has a 30% failure rate and temporarily sends the group to sometimes less-than-ideal, random destinations.

Why not have the group vamp into a legendary hunter’s study that includes this grand display case? That would be a very easy game board to create (just a wooden floor, a few walls, and a door). This scatter terrain display piece can do most of the “talking.”

The Forgotten Rails Hovertrains will revolutionize Waterdeep but will also be filled with unexpected danger. So DM Ben started another random table that includes misunderstood NPC Molly “Buckshot” Snipes. If our players get the opportunity to meet Molly face-to-face, it would be only natural to include this Taxidermist Display inside her private lair.

Now, all that’s left to do is update our Kinda Sorta Portal table, which is a mix of dangerous and potentially more passive encounters.

Today feels like a Kinda, Sorta Portal day as we continue to build out our free, random table for your DnD transporting pleasure. Let’s see where your finicky teleportation device might drop your party this time!

First, a quick recap of this series for any new readers: the party was given a magical timepiece from Waterdeep’s master gnome tinkerer, Tink Urbelle, allowing players to return to their home base once per long rest. There’s just one small catch. This arcane doorway has a 30% chance of temporarily placing you at the wrong location…that’s the “Kinda, Sorta” part of the “Kinda, Sortal Portal” magic item.

Underground is the central gameboard theme for this next magical entry. For that, we’re going to utilize Milestone Heroes’ marvelous Caverns series. We’ve showcased their magnificent modular STLs on the channel numerous times, including a detailed, step-by-step paint guide! So, you have everything at your fingertips to create this quickie one-shot random event.

To complete our encounter, we’re going to utilize two swell creators for our miniatures: mz4250 and Vae Victis. We’re able to quickly identify the Vae Victis here, but man, it was a slog to try and give you the direct link for mz4250’s creation. He has 5,000-plus STLs — no, seriously, he’s made that many free 3D prints — and we were initially coming up zeroes on our Google Image search. Luckily, the kind patrons on the Loot Studios discord helped us out!

First, let’s showcase mz4250’s 3D-print interpretation of the Morkoth! This garbage gobbler is from Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Monsters of the Multiverse. Resident painter Kimmy Utah colored this freaky monster up for us, and we love the final product here!

Our other central mini here is by Vae Victis and is from their applicable named Corpses set. Please forgive the FDM layer lines here (which appear more on a zoomed-in digital image). This was before we started using Adaptive Layering in our Prusa slicer. DM Ben loves to lure adventurers further into an encounter with a body. Players just can’t resist investigating (and looting) our fallen human adventurer Cleric.

Now that we’ve got our terrain and miniatures, let’s flush out the parameters of this encounter. The Kinda Sorta Portal drops adventurers from above (in the spirit of the classic Time Bandits film), so the players will start at the far end of the map.

It will be pitch black except for the remnants of a nearly burned-out torch. A battered body is seen poking out from an overside stalagmite. Anyone with dark vision will also notice a faint outline of what can only be described as a “pile of garbage.” They will also hear a few clanking sounds from that direction.

The players will ultimately see the back of the Morkoth, who is feverishly fishing through the rest of the nearly-dead adventurers’ belongings. The fallen human will show glimpses of being alive, such as slow breaths and slight movements, but the guy is hanging on by a thread after getting thrashed by this freak monster. At first, the group will see an empty flask land near them. Next, they see a sword added to the mysterious collector’s treasure pile.

Our six-member, fifth-level party should be able to hold out against this aberration…at least temporarily. A reminder of the portal’s unpredictable mechanics:

Activating the portal the first time (takes 2 rnds/12 sec).

There’s a 30% chance of being transported to a random location.

Players are temporarily stuck in that unplanned spot (for up to 6 rnds/36 sec).

They have to wait at least 3 rnds/18 secs before they can get back into it again.

The timepiece holder has to go through the portal last.

So if the Kinda, Sorta Portal takes you to the wrong spot, you must be there for at least three rounds before you try to get to your original home destination again. After six rounds, the portal fizzles out, and you’re stuck in your current location (if you don’t jump back in it before then).

All that’s left to do now is update our growing teleportation table!

We had so much darn fun bringing you the inaugural entry for the Kinda, Sorta Portal series that we want to keep that energy going with our second random table entry. This time, we’re utilizing a fab Bathhouse Miniature by STL Miniatures to set the scene when our adventurers literally drop in for an unexpected visit.

The goal is to create 20 unique encounters that can be rolled with your d20 on a random table whenever the group’s arcane teleportation device malfunctions and places the group in a random location. Think of these like movie cut scenes – they’re meant to be quick but potentially quite intense, especially if the party is all banged up from a previous encounter. Your players will need to be quick on their feet!

Our main character in this encounter comes from STL Miniatures Bath House set. It’s got all sorts of nifty miniatures and detailed scatter terrain and feels very Roman-esque. We’re not going to place the party in that sorta environment, but there’s an imposing mini that we’ve been dying to integrate into our campaign.

First, we should explain how we will build these portal pitstop encounters. Since the party is likely to only stay at this inadvertent drop point for very long (3 rnds/18 sec), DM Ben doesn’t feel the need to create elaborate gameboards. Instead, he’ll utilize these key elements:

6×6 themed floor tile (1-2)

Miniature(s)

Accent pieces (2-3)

This dungeon master prep resembles how DM Ben creates a city store or tavern visit. We’re just trying to immerse the group and instill some flavor into the game whenever we can.

So, DM Ben starts with the right floor tile. He always keeps a larger d20 floor version for a tavern/house, dungeon, cavern, and forest within arm’s reach. This encounter will occur inside a tavern room, but the group probably won’t know for sure since these unplanned interactions can happen so fast.

This floor tile comes from Milestone Heroes and their amazing Village series. We even made a handy paint guide in case you need a fast tutorial with all the specific steps and paints.

Next, we grab a miniature from our collection that best fits the scenario. In this case, this mighty bathhouse guy is perfect. He doesn’t seem like someone who wouldn’t like his me-time routine disrupted. Colored by resident painter Kimmy Utah, we absolutely love the pose and mighty aura he gives off.

His name is Boris the Bruiser and he is a legendary pit fighter in Waterdeep. He stands at 6′ 8″ and is a monster of a man — think The Rock in his absolute prime. Our big man is a professional bar fighter rumored to have the most potent punch in the Realm. He lost his very first match but has never fallen since then. All this ring fighting is taking a toll on the poor guy, and he just wants to soak away the pain.

Now, we need some accent pieces for his room. We grabbed this large soaking tub with a small wooden stand to hold rags, bandages, and healing ointments. It can be a needle in a haystack to source these more common, smaller 3D scatter pieces, but these likely came from STL Miniatures or Cast n Play (who specialize in these dungeon-dressing 3D prints).

We’ve got everything we need for our encounter, so now we can set the scene. Poor Boris is in rough shape and is cleaning up after a particularly tough bare-knuckles match. Unfortunately, the party will be interrupting his post-fight routine by falling into his big bathtub! DM Ben envisions exiting the portal exit effect just like the classic movie, Time Bandits (where the group would fall from above).

The players will be falling from above and directly into the iron tub. DM Ben will have the players roll initiative to determine in which order they fall. The highest roll is bad news, as that person will take 1d4 bludgeoning damage for each character that lands on him.

That leaves us with a cool yet simple setup to set the mood and allow for plenty of DnD shenanigans. Boris has just drawn a nice warm bath and is starting to clean up his wounds from his last fight. His evening’s winnings (300 gp) sit in a simple pouch on the nightstand. As a seasoned brawler, he’s seen it all and will simply lift his head and let out a frustrated groan when the players come crashing in. He’ll say in a rugged, raspy voice, “You better have a great reason for ruining my bath.”

If things get out of hand, DM Ben will use the Natural_Crit’s stats for an Ogre Brawler. This NPC build includes a multi-attack Haymaker, a Juggernaut Charge, and a Heavy Shove bonus action. We have a fourth-level party of six, so DM Ben might nudge the attack-to-hit from +6 to +8, so there’s a fighting chance he lands a few jabs.

What happens next is up to the group. There are plenty of possibilities here:

Friends: apologize & introduce themselves.

Foes: Grab the fight purse & hold him off.

Charm: Talk their way out of it.

Bargain: ask if Boris needs anything (sidequest).

Bribe: Place a few coins on the table as a peace offering.

The group must stay in their undesirable location for at least 18 seconds. Still, they don’t have to leave immediately, so the encounter will unfold based on their uneasiness and whether any combat ensues. Either way, this is going to be a fun one!

Now, all we need to do is update our table!

It's random table entry 1 for our new Kinda, Sorta Portal series! Let's get this 3D-print party started!

Teleportation goes with DnD like jam to bread, but where’s that addicting 3D-print spin? We got you. Sound the trumpets because it’s the inaugural entry for our new Kinda Sorta Portal series! We’re super-stoked to start building a new random table for our home-brewed, arcane gateway item we shared earlier this year. Places, everyone, places!

Our mission is clear: to bring fun and engaging 3D-prints wrapped with tasty RPG content ideas so you have everything you need to drop your new miniatures and scatter terrain onto your game table as quickly as possible. This new ongoing series will bring forth new scene settings on a d20 random table for whenever someone opens that powerful pocketwatch, and its magic doesn’t initially quite get you where you want to be!

A quick recap: the party was given a magical timepiece from Waterdeep’s master gnome tinkerer, Tink Urbelle, allowing players to return to their home base once per long rest. There’s just one small catch. This arcane doorway has a 30% chance of temporarily placing you at the wrong location…that’s the “Kinda, Sorta” part of the “Kinda, Sortal Portal” magic item.

The portal itself is represented by this slick 3D print by Kraken 3D Studios and their Mole King’s Lair Kickstarter. And the sequence goes something like this:

Activate the portal (takes 2 rnds/12 sec).

There’s a 30% chance of being transported to a random location.

Players are temporarily stuck in that unplanned spot (for 6 rnds/36 sec).

Then they have up to 3 rnds/18 secs to get back into it again.

The timepiece holder has to go through last.

The mechanics aren’t too bad, right? Plus, there’s a fun percentage dice roll, and the more dice that hit the table, the better!

So, today, we’re utilizing some scatter terrain from the brilliant creators at Infinite Dimensions Games. They made this must-print Hunter’s Camp set, and we just fell in love with it instantly. These pieces print support-free on your FDM printer but also turn out fab on any resin printer. They’ve been releasing more and more of these fun, themed sets lately, which makes their monthly Patreon subscription a no-brainer.

We’re focusing on the core scatter piece: the hunter’s tent. We added a mini here to help you better see the overall model scale, but this rugged shelter covers a perfect size of 5 x3 d20 squares. Resident painter Kimmy Utah brushed this beauty up for us.

While we love all the different furs strung about here and there, the assorted hanging meats on one of its sides give us the biggest chuckle. Pork chops, anyone?! We also like how the creator inserted little scenery touches around the tent to make the encounter feel more immersive.

Now, let’s create what happens when the party suddenly appears in the middle of this camp! DM Ben has some ideas…

Portal drop point: literally on the campfire (1d4+1 fire damage | athletics save for half).

Typical forest sounds fall around them.

Two shadow-spotted bedrolls are on each side.

Large xx prints can be seen in the ground.

Chaotic combat sounds can be heard inside the main tent.

The players have been transported right into an ongoing wild animal attack! Blood in dimly lit areas looks like shadows at first, so the players won’t be able to tell what has happened outside the tent immediately. If investigated, they will see two fresh, torn-apart victims. The noise from the tent is an active combat between a large human warrior and one deranged beast.

If you need some wild animal ideas, the angry creature could be a large bear, giant spider, dire wolf, or even a giant snake! Even better, another cool feature of this terrain piece is the hollowed innards. That makes it easy to put any surprise miniature underneath it for a big reveal! Granted, a larger monster probably doesn’t fit underneath our tent perfectly, but it’s fun to have that reveal option as a DM.

The DM never knows when someone in the group will activate the portal and roll 71% or higher, so we need our Kinda Sorta Portal destinations at the ready! We’re using some old Hatchbox filament print boxes to store each Kinda Sorta Portal encounter entry with its corresponding table entry labeled on the outside.

We’ll throw all the necessary pieces into the box, including our tent, a campfire, warrior miniature, wild animal mini, two sleeping bedrolls, and even several Dwarven Forge Wilderness trees. That’s the beauty of this brief encounter – you can make it as detailed or bare-bones as you like.

You could also plop this one down on the table whenever the party simply camps for a night. It’s worth noting that this type of encounter fits nicely into our Wandering Monsters Wilderness Trek table if you want to include it there too!

Now, all we need to do is update our table!
