We’re moving to the great outdoors with today’s DnD post, where we’re recognizing some great makers of TTRPG woodland scatter terrain. These four skilled artisans join forces with their slick STLs, so you can immerse your players in a forest backdrop. That’s good livin’ if you can find, right?!

Typically, we only feature one or two 3D-print creators in a DnD post here on 3DRPGPrints.com, but forest gameboards are special in that it takes a village of prints to really immerse your players in a woodland encounter. Meaning, if we showcase one particular STL, everyone will give a not-bad shrug. However, show those same gamers four complementary pieces and their adventuring eyes light up.

So, let’s start with Tiny Furniture and their must-print Old Woods set. You get 15 STLs packed with a woodsy motif, and you’ll want to run off all of ’em. We love how durable and beefy their 3D prints turn out. They have some real heft to them and are stuffed with all sorts of subtle details, so your paint jobs pop! We featured a couple of their other stacked logs in an earlier post.

Next, we have World Forge Miniatures. They’re another buff creator who delivers high-quality, non-fragile prints. Having completed 3D prints, snap in your hands as you take ’em off your plate is maddening. No worries here, gang. You can just tell these guys are DnD gamers and know what we all want in a great 3D print. We’re featuring one of their STLs from their Chest and Barrel Adventure Collection.

Now we’ll shift to some stealthy troublemakers who will be rather tricky to detect as your players make camp under that lush forest canopy. Teirale is a creator with a delightful collection of free STLs for your gaming library. We especially loved those mimic pumpkins and made them a staple in our Huckle Riverstone NPC and his “Pumpkins that ain’t pumpkins” storyline. This time, we tried their free Mimic Tree download, which works great in your outdoor gameboards.

Last but not least, let’s tie this woodland scatter terrain setting together with some hungry chompin’ foes of the sorta-arachnid variety. For that, we once again turn to the talented Mr. Schlossbauer and his free Fearwood Spider 3D print. We usually start with just one and then determine post-paint-job if we’re going to print a mob squad of five (which is an emphatic “yes” here).

DM Ben was the colorist on these beauties, having gained a lot of confidence in painting all things wood. So, he went to all his go-to Army Painter Speedpaint colors, including:

Dark Wood (paired with Vallejo Ochre)

Brownish Decay

Desolate Brown

Forest Sprite

Sand Golem

Pallid Bone

Ashen Stone

Gravelord Grey

Layer with ’em, blend with ’em, drybrush with ’em, and even edge with ’em. You just can’t go wrong with these particular colors, and they’re all sure to really boost your painting confidence.

Our Tree Mimic is so darn good that it sorta gets lost in the hedgeline in the above pic. Whoops. This completed DnD 3D-print is a perfect candidate for DM Ben’s miniature swap. Meaning, he wouldn’t start with this one on the board. Instead, he will Plain Jane stump or tree on the game map and then swap it out when it’s time for that cloaked mimic to strike!

Here’s another angle of the other pieces so you can see the immense model detail on all sides. We added a little flock to our Fearwood Spider miniature base, which we often do, especially if they’re outdoorsy in nature (pun intended). Pretty, frickin’ great, right?!

Until next time!

Last week we shared our 3D Print idea for the office Halloween Pumplin contest so let’s see how things have progressed.

So when we don’t send our prints out to resident painter, Kimmy Utah, we bear down and try to paint some of the prints ourselves here in sunny Arizona. And when we muster up enough courage, it’s always via the slap chop/Speedpaints method. However, we just saw a recent video by brilliant Dana Howl where she talks about the new method called raw chop. We winced at using airbrush primer but liked the quality white paint suggestion.

The rumors are indeed true: a slap-chop base followed by Army Speedpaints can absolutely make any novice painter a happy camper. And what’s especially cool here is those darker chop spots helped make our pumpkins look like the buggers just popped up from the soil.

The specific Army Painter paints and steps stayed pretty true to our original plan:

Pumpkin: Fire Giant Orange

Tongue: Purple Alchemy

Teeth: Pallid Bone

Eye: Blood Red

Stalk: Malignant Green

Base: Americana Burnt Umber

Finish: Assorted Flock

While thrilled with the paint scheme, we were a bit bummed by the bases.

The base on Teirale’s free pumpkin mimic STL is pretty tight and quite smooth. So, that burnt umber ground cover went on with a bit of a thud. We certainly could have used AKI Muddy Ground or Vallejo Earth Texture. However, we went to our flock box to help us get the best seasonal fall effect.

What’s the best thing about using flock over paint and textures? It’s really, really hard to screw it up! Plus, there is just so much variety out there for you to choose from – rocks, moss, sand, trees, dirt, and of course…leaves. Just a couple of sprinkles here and there and whammo – you got yourself a fall to remember, Charlie Brown!

We still have to show you how we incorporated our 3D prints into the pumpkin itself but we’ll save that for Halloween!

It’s that time of year as Halloween gets closer and closer to descending upon us all! So let’s see how DM Ben is putting a printed twist on one of our holiday office party contests!

A pumpkin decoration contest, you say? Challenge accepted. The 3DRPG team might now be handy with a carving knife but we know our way around a printer and a paintbrush, baby!

Did you know orange is the new gray – as in Hatchbox filament gray? If you’re a regular follower of our 24/7 live Twitch stream, you know that it’s our filament of choice. Thus, it only makes sense that we take our orange pumpkin and give it a coat of Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Flat Gray Primer as the base coat. Will it even stick to a pumpkin’s surface? No idea. We’ll find out later this week.

For our killer pumpkin mimic minions, we grabbed this amazing model by Teirale. Many of his models are supportless including this gem and even better, it’s a free download. Still, please do consider joining his Patreon if you can.

We rattled off about a dozen of these mean lil’ bastards on our resin Mars Pro 3 and dropped a black primer on ’em to get the paint steps rolling. The print time was less than 3 hours and the longest step was basically letting them dry for 24 hours before curing.

As you can tell from the party invite above, time is of the essence here! DM Ben is going to face his fears and try to take on the paint duties rather than passing them over to our resident brush master, Kimmy Utah. He’ll start by using the tried and true slap chop technique by The Honest Wargamer which is simply: (1) Prime Black (2) Drybrush gray (3) Drybrush white.

For the specific paints, DM Ben is a novice painter and the holiday clock is ticking so he’ll naturally lean on Army Speedpaints. To decide which specific colors to use, he utilizes this excellent color guide by the insanely talented Dana Howl. We’ve visited this handy page so often that we should get our own parking space. It includes sample paints by both Army Speedpaints and Citadel Contrast paints.

The other resource we’re going to utilize here to ease our painting trepidations is to ask the Tale of Painters discord and see if the highly knowledgeable community has any other suggestions. Their website has great color charts too.

Ultimately, we’re going to try the following:

Pumpkin: Fire Giant Orange

Tongue: Purple Alchemy

Teeth: Pallid Bone

Eye: Blood Red

Stalk: Malignant Green

Base: Americana Burnt Umber

Finish: a light black or brown wash

DM Ben is just going to line these up Ford Model T assembly-line style and apply each color across all the minis before moving to the next step.

For D&D 5e monster stats, we loved this comprehensive pumpkin monster guide review by Ember Dungeon Mastery. There are so many baddie options to choose from too: a Pumpkin King, Pumpkin Tendrils, Pumpkin Bombs, and Pumpkin Plants.

Be sure to check out Teirale’s full mimic set on Joseph Prusa’s Printables website. 3DRPG has printed nearly all of ’em and they’ve turned out great.

We’ll be sure to circle back and show you the finished works in the coming weeks!
