Today’s post is one of those times where we picked the miniatures first and will build NPC roles around them second. One of the best things about a 3D printer and a large TTRPG library is that no matter what prewritten module or home-brewed scenario you’re playing, combing through your collection ultimately gets the DM where he/she wants to be. Still, there are some occasions when we see the STL and are like, “3D print first and ask questions later.”

Let’s start with this frackin’ awesome STL by Titan Forge! We grabbed this hippity hoppity Bunnaby ranger from their free Thangs page. This talented maker has a whole line of animalfolk critters. Always be sure to bookmark your favorite DnD creator’s freebie pages, because this exact same STL was $5 on MMF. It pays to look around, right?!

Resident Painter Kimmy Utah colored this small but mighty bunny assassin up, and we’re just so impressed with the overall color palette she used. Each pigment choice perfectly highlights one of the model’s many fine details. We especially love its long ears poking through its cool cloak and its leg wrappings. We also think this particular rabbit ranger will pair perfectly with other bunny miniatures in our library.

Our second marvelous 3D-printed miniature comes from an older set we snagged from Cast n Play a ways back. This is the same set we got several cool Dwarven guides from for The Forgotten Rails campaign setting. Now, frankly, we need another dwarf miniature like we need another hole in the head, but there are so many amazing STLs in this Dwarven Legacy set that we couldn’t resist.

Sunrise Sven was our lead painter for this Dula Miner, and we love it! He always does such an amazing job on their clothing color selections. He loves using Army Painter Speedpaint and Citadel Contrast Paints, yet he rarely gets any pooling effects. Pure magic! That candle on his mining helmet cracks us up every time. We’re also very pro-overalls clothing here.

DM Ben usually keeps a side box of To-Be-Determined DnD NPCs and Monsters in his office for whenever the creativity strikes him. For example, he thinks it would be a hoot if the players need someone to guide them into a dangerous Corederite mine, and that this particular Dwarf steps right up to be hired (but can he ultimately be trusted?). Our deadly Bunnaby is probably on the run himself, or is hired by one of the players’ many enemies to be hunted down. We’ll see where the dice take us in future posts!

We’re fairly certain (but not O.J. certain) that no jury in their right mind will convict us for swapping our 3D-printed miniature for a third time, but let’s present the facts in this case before rushing to conclusions.

Although we don’t need to present fiery opening arguments here, we want to consider that some first-time readers may be present, and we don’t want them to fumble a perception check from the outset. Plus, showing the miniature progression here will only help our case. We generate a sizable portion of our ongoing D&D blog content by sharing what we’re currently creating and preparing in our own office and home campaigns, so occasional flip-flopping is inevitable.

We’re currently combining our homebrewed scenarios with D&D Beyond’s Acquisitions Incorporated module. The second chapter of this free 5e adventure involves investigating another franchise that has mysteriously gone dark, and Omin Dran wants answers. That missing franchise’s last known location was at Tresendar Manor in Phandalin. The players are ultimately going to have to throw down against a bunch of baddies in a nifty dungeon crawl. Once successful, the module calls for two hobgoblins to appear out of nowhere to clean the place up.

We initially picked out a couple of 3D-printed miniatures from Fat Dragon Games and EC3D Designs. Nothing wrong with our original selections, as this NPC interaction isn’t critical to the story, and a couple of solid minis works just fine here.

So, our players haven’t gotten to this specific encounter yet, which means lucky DM Ben (and the 3DRPG team) had more time to think of a better miniature pick. Time is, after all, a dungeon master’s worst enemy and also its best ally. With a little more breathing room, we found these two adorable diversuit steampunk miniatures by Cobramode. Upgrade definitely unlocked.

Then, while looking for things to post about this week, we came across an even better mini pick! Now, no RPG jury member with an Intelligence score of 4 or higher would ever dispute that this sculpt is more suitable than the ones above, right?! Come on, this free download is insane in the membrane! Titan Forge just crushed this DnD Alchemist 3D Print sculpt.

Even funnier, we even already had this awesome alchemist painted! We sent him to Sunrise Sven months ago, but we just hadn’t gotten around to sorting that particular box. One could clearly argue that this miniature was destined to be placed in our ongoing DnD campaign. Like, there she is conveniently in an untouched pile of painted miniatures, just waiting for our WI sausage fingers to put her on our TTRPG game table.

Sunrise Sven is an Army Painter Speedpainter enthusiast (much like us), and his choice of colors was delightful. He did a wonderful mix of complementary colors, and this 3D-printed DnD miniature sings or sweeps is more like it! We especially love the dark leather mixed with the oversized gear and those colorful Princess Leia-esque hair buns.

This miniature selection isn’t a hobgoblin per the 5e module’s original encounter description, but we always go for form over race when it comes to picking our scenario minis. The gear matters most here, as this is a HAZMAT cleanup situation, and Titan Forge captured it perfectly.

DM Ben is going to save those adorable Cobramode mechanical divers for a better underwater encounter, but will now keep the original two miniatures from the first post, as well as this humorous gnome steampunk traveling device. The plan is to have this clunky machine sputtering towards them, and then the two dudes and this Alchemist cleaner will dismount to take care of business.

The “Redshirts” will do a lot of the heavy lifting after our disinfector sweeps the aftermath of the mini dungeon delve. The guys will be sprinkling some sort of dust on all the corpses, which accelerates their decomposition. DM Ben wouldn’t be surprised if the players try a little sleight of hand to swipe some of that magical powder.

Today’s DnD blog entry is a two-parter and a bit of a tease. We thought it would be fun to share our main arcane character now and then share the encounter build around him with Loke Battle Mats the following day. Besides, who doesn’t love a little DnD intrigue?!

Our latest spellcaster 3D print comes courtesy of Titan Forge Miniatures! This marvelous bookworm was especially tricky to source because we originally got him from a Free Trial Welcome Pack and initially spaced on the maker. Special thanks to MissyDH on Discord for recognizing this 3D print at lightning speed!

Sourcing our prints, guys…it’s the worst part of our job. The reason is we print thousands of miniatures and terrain annually, and there can be as much as a six-month-plus delay before we finally get them painted by one of our resident painters.

So, here he is in all his majestic glory. Resident painter Kimmy Utah took on the coloring task and came through with flying colors (pun intended). The subtle details are palpable: the sitting posture, the opened spellbook, the glasses (our fav), and on and on and on.

Here’s another angle to showcase some more fun details, like his adorable beverage (because we all need one by our side) and the cool, fluffy clouds. Resin bases that aren’t physically part of the entire print are our least fav. If we have to attach a separate base, we’ll use some old laser-cut wood bases from Gen Cons gone by or clear bases first.

So, what’s this dude’s story? Well, he works in a grand historic city library, and he takes his job very seriously. Think of him as the DnD version of Lt. Joe Bookman from Seinfeld. Well, let me tell you something joy boy; his fanatic demeanor is perfect for our newest NPC!

We’re indeed going to name him Archibold Bookman. He’s the master librarian of the Kinda Sorta Portal space, which the players inadvertently vamped into when the teleportation went awry.
