Greetings, fellow big game hunters! We got some new, mighty woodland foes for your trophy room, so let’s see if you can handle these 3D prints, or if you end up on their wall!

We’re going to feature three mighty animal 3D prints today, but one is quite generic, so alas, sourcing that particular STL file was darn tricky. Still, we think these are excellent additions to our free Wandering Monster Wilderness Trek Table, so let’s dive in.

We’ll start with our primary inspiration for today’s DnD blog entry. We haven’t really made many bear 3D prints because we already have several from our WotC prepainted minis collection. Then, we came across this wicked good Werepolarbear sculpt by the mighty Schlossbauer. The timing was impeccable as DM Ben was chomping at the bit to try a furry-bear paint scheme.

Yes, technically ol’ Schlossbauer calls this one a Werepolarbear, but we don’t play a lot of cold climate scenarios, so we decided to go with the traditional bear necessities here (pun intended).

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Fur P1: Heavy Drybrush of ASP Hardened Leather.

Fur P2: Light Drybrush of FAN Ancient Tree.

Face/Tongue: FAN Moonstone Skin.

Hands/Fur Pads: FAN Moonstone Skin.

Tail: FAN Fur Brown.

Claws: FAN Brainmatter Beige & light black drybrush.

Teeth: Matt White.

We also wanted the base to complement this Wearbear’s mighty power. Hence, we put a big ol’ rock (from DM Ben’s backyard) and a broken tree. Toughness unlocked, baby!

Quite confident in his paint scheme, DM Ben wanted to do a little batch painting, so he grabbed another fuzzy wuzzy miniature from his Pile of <del>Shame</del> Opportunity. This one came from EC3D Designs and their awesome Beasts & Baddies II Kickstarter.

Pretty cool, right?! We love it when a paint scheme looks killer on multiple miniature sculpts. With a core brown bear scheme now in hand, we can try other color variations. We can also apply this fur scheme to other similiar miniatures and scatter terrain. A win-win.

Lastly, we wanted to share a paint-scheme transfer success story from a recent Tomb Thursday TTRPG blog entry, when we colored up these awesome Subek guards by mz4250. We’ve been dying to pin down a crocodile paint scheme as we need it for a lot of our Egyptian stuff.

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Body P1: WAR Scaly Hide + Green Wash + Strong Tone Wash.

Body P2: Heavier black Drybrush & very light white drybrush.

Eyes: WAR Lava Orange.

Teeth: Matt White.

Feet: FAN Uniform Grey.

The key to this miniature, though, was its base. DM Ben was sorting through his basing material box and pulled out a jar of AK Interactive Water Gel Swamp Green (which he still hadn’t opened). And boy howdy, did it go on and dry great (with a few swamp tufts added in for good measure).

Now, we already did a Brown Bear entry in our Wandering Monster table, with its minis previously done by resident painter Kimmy Utah. So, you could add our newest Bruin creations to this trio and make it a monster party of five. We also think the Schlossbauer Bear would make an excellent pappa bear, and the EC3D Designs STL could be momma bear.

Until next time!

Greetings, fellow monster hunters. Boy, do we have a wild and wacky wandering monster SEAL-Team-Six-style post for y’all today. Shields up!

You know what’s especially cool about a free, d20 Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster table? The hits just keep on coming, and we’re never really done adding new baddies to the list! Even better, there aren’t any hard-and-fast rules here. If you don’t feel like doing a random encounter role by letting the dice decide your party’s fate, a dungeon master can pull a specific entry that fits the current situation. DM Ben has utilized this beloved table both ways, with resounding results.

We’re using today’s fresh TTRPG 3D prints to facilitate a previous storyline for The Forgotten Rails and our spooky, mysterious Collector villain. DM Ben probably won’t use these magnificent Goose Golems as wandering monsters and instead plans to introduce them as a rescue squad for their then-captured leader (who the players will be guarding and transporting on a Hovertrain when the time comes).

We adore our marvelous creator’s clever creativity in merging a goose with an owl bear. Like, of course, this DnD miniature is going to be an instant hit with gamers. The second we saw this TTRPG STL, we knew it would move to the front of our 3D printing and painting queue.

We inadvertently stumbled upon Toadstool Weaver and his great collection of files while doing some general perusing on Cults3D.com over the weekend. We’re so glad we found his work. Mad skills for sure. We’re looking forward to showing off more of his stuff in future posts! Today, we’re all about this epic Goose Golem, which is a free download (but tips are encouraged).

DM Ben was so eager to get these chiseled monsters on the table that he took a deep breath, did some Google-suggested paint scheme searches, and just went to paintin’:

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Head P1: Layer with WAR Mummy Robes.

Head P2: Strong Tone Wash.

Head P3: Drybrush FAN Triumphant Navy.

Beak: FAN Lava Orange.

Feathers P1: Layer FAN Leather Brown.

Feathers P2: Drybrush FAN Oak Brown.

Feathers P3: Strong Tone Wash.

Feathers P4: Spot Drybrush FAN Monster Brown.

Feathers P5: Edge with FAN Wasteland Clay + Soft Tone Wash.

Skin P1: Layer ASP Holy White.

Skin P2: Drybrush FAN Triumphant Navy.

Skin P3: Drybrush Black.

Skin P4: Edge ASP Camo Cloak.

Skin p5: Light drybrush P3 Menoth White.

Feet P1: ASP Nuclear Sunrise

Feet P2: Edge with FAN Lava Orange

And for good measure, you can even add a little GSW Gloss Varnish to the beak and feet to make ’em look wet. This seems like a lot of steps, but DM Ben just kept tweaking the initial test print until he got it in a spot he was happy with. You definitely could do a version of this DnD miniature with fewer paints, but we encourage you to experiment.

DM Ben is going to treat this gaggle of Goose Golems as a covert rescue squad, hell-bent on freeing their lunatic leader. We thought that with this being such a unique miniature, we were going to have to roll up our sleeves and come up with some custom stats too. No need, as Toadstool Weaver was even cool enough to post full DnD 5e monster numbers on his Patreon. Solid picks, but the starting hit points at 114 were just a bit too high for a full squad of six, so we revised the stat block like so: AC: 16, HP: 60, multi-att: Beak +7 (2d8+4)/Claws +7 (2d6+4), Honk: DC 13 Con or 4d6 (save for half), Vulnerability: bread.

Greetings, fellow Fungi (and gals)! We hope your TTRPG dice were red-hot this weekend… and if they weren’t, good news: that’s sesh is in the past. Let’s look forward with a fun new DnD homebrewed mushroom encounter!

Sometimes a Dungeon Master has a new storyline pop into his head, but he delays crafting it because there’s no clear opening to insert that arc into the ongoing TTRPG campaign. So, instead, the idea lingers and lingers some more until he/she can’t take it any longer! Welp, that’s exactly what happened to DM Ben, and here’s how we approached what happened next!

Longtime 3DRPG readers probably know where we’re going through here, but let’s briefly catch you up. The High Forest is a big part of our ongoing DnD campaign. The group has had many travels and homebrewed exploits within its heavy canopy. DM Ben created two warring factions: (1) Shady Tree & his Angry Acorns and (2) a competing Miffed Mushroom contingent. He even teased the leader of the Miffed Mushroom clan, Tibarious Trunk, in a recent bump-in encounter! The seeds were firmly planted! He’s been dying to develop a Hatfield–McCoy rivalry and force his players to pick a side!

Well, lo and behold, in our last DnD Sesh, DM Ben brought that homebrewed storyline dream front and center when he had several Angry Acorns come to the aid of the party during a nasty Goblin ambush! Not that the group needed it, though, thanks to two fierce fireballs by the party’s magic users.

Still, DM Ben knew this was his chance to insert his desired Mushroom Alley map point into the campaign. The dust settled on the goblin battle, and the guys really wanted to know why the Angry Acorns came to their aid. DM Ben created an acorn lieutenant named Shelby (as well as a lunatic, bloodthirsty acorn called Harry). Shelby knew the party hadn’t picked a side, so he did a brilliant job convincing the players the acorn alliance was their best bet (even though the mushrooms are more ruthless and larger in number).

That new truce-pact was exactly what DM Ben wanted to have happen because now he can have a hair-raising mushroom encounter when the players return to the vast High Forest! Basically, the players will have a fierce encounter with the mushrooms within their own borders. Tibarious will enter the fray at some point and call for a ceasefire. He will then explain how insanely disappointed he is that the group sided with those untrustworthy acorns! So, today we’re going to start building this new Mushroom Alley encounter, as it’s gonna be a biggy!

Let’s start with some initial mushroom scatter. We’re nearly positive this mushroom cluster on the left is by Printable Scenery and was from their slick The Gloaming Swamps and Wilderness Kickstarter. They actually have all their amazing mushroom STLs in this nifty website bundle, and we highly recommend you gobble it up.

Resident painter Kimmy Utah has been our go-to colorist for nearly all our mushroom terrain and miniatures. We can’t wait to show you more of them! DM Ben is going to do his patented terrain-for-minis-swap when the encounter timing is just right.

That other miniature from the pic above is by Dragon Trappers Lodge and is their amazing Myconid Sovereign mini. It’s from their epic Mushroom Bayou series. We’ve bought most of this three-part series and will certainly be showcasing more completed minis from it as time moves on.

Again, Kimmy Utah’s paintbrush was all over this TTRPG miniature, and we’re really thrilled that she did them in lots of different colors! DM Ben is going to start by having this one sprout from the ground in the blink of an eye and greet the players. This mini represents one of their “knowledge trees” while also serving as a lookout in Mushroom Alley. He’e goes by the name Hymeno and is a Spore Keeper of their sacred lands.

He will spring up and stop the party dead in their tracks with a “Who dares enter Mushroom Alley uninvited. State your name and your case, or you won’t like what happens next!” Our office game group has named themselves The Contractors, and when they explain who they are, the Spore Keeper will instantly know who they are, as their new acorn alliance traveled the vines fast. He will demand they break their truce with the Angry Acorns or pay a hefty toll (100 gp) to pass unharmed.

Now, the group could talk their way through the encounter with a series of persuasion and charisma checks, but if things take a nasty turn, Hymeno will suddenly rip off several smaller mushrooms from his body and create some fierce soldiers for his side! And the minis that are going to be used for those menacing monsters are these Deathcap Hydras by Printed Encounter! These nasty chompers are a free download, and the sculpt is wicked good!

We 3D-printed a small group of these un-fungi and shipped them off to Kimmy Utah to paint. She knows that whenever we send her duplicates of a miniature, she should paint them a little differently so we can better identify them at a glance as monster 1, monster 2, etc. Boy howdy, did she absolutely crush these guys! We’ve had these front and center in a display case for some time now. We just love ’em!

DM Ben adores things with a lot of attacks because it can be way easier to balance a fight when a monster can attack more than one enemy in a single round (especially when there are six players in our party).

In terms of some DnD 5e stats, the Myconid Deathcap is pretty solid. Our three-headed warriors have an AC 15 and 90 HP. To better fit our wonderful new miniatures, we’re just going to tweak the following:

Change the multi-attack to three bite attacks.

Change the damage type to piercing.

Give them immunity to stun (cause they’re a plant).

Each time they do 30 points to one monster, one of its heads falls off.

The to-hit bonus for each bite attack is upped to +7 (since we have a sixth-level party).

Damage is also revised to 2d8+3.

Their long necks give them a reach of 10.

They can fire a deathcap spore or slumner spore once per round as a bonus action.

Hymeno, the Spore Keeper, is a non-combatant here. The instant he takes damage, he drops these Death Caps and crumbles back into the earth. Pretty fun, right? You could use all these guys in one of our Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster table rolls, too!

Until next time!

Greetings, fellow monster hunters! Another work week is upon us, and that leaves just four days before we drop weekend dice again. So, let’s get you a free download to spin up prior to your next game day! You could even get two 3D prints if you have the time and resin.

Deciding which initial Wandering Monster list to attach this week’s baddies to was quite the office debate. We ultimately concluded that mosquitoes are outside dwellers and then come inside to fuel up. Still, you can drop these guys in a swamp, in a wooded forest, in a dark cavern, and even in a damp dungeon. Monster placement flexibility abounds!

Stumbling upon and inadvertently disturbing a monster’s lair is a DnD tale as old as time. That “oh no – what did we just do?” moment when the group suddenly realizes that their curiosity has got the best of them never really gets old. Even better, you can scale up or down this encounter depending on how much craft time you have.

Today’s featured minis come courtesy of the mighty Schlossbauer, who once again gives us another free download to grow our never-ending library of monsters. These pesky Mosquito Larvae give you all the annoying bites you need to set up a wandering monster encounter that gets out of hand in a big hurry.

DM Ben had these primed and ready to roll months ago, but he just couldn’t settle on a paint scheme he was comfortable with. It’s not exactly easy to visualize Mosquito Larvae. Besides, 3DRPG Studios is based in sunny Chandler, AZ, and we’re blessed not to run into these bug biters very often.

Still, our Google search technique for potential paint scheme suggestions has been working so well lately that he just decided to trust their paint step suggestions and slip in a few colors of his own.

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop base.

Body P1: ASP Maggot Skin.

Body P2: Highlight with FAN Brainmatter Beige.

Body P3: FAN Military Shade Wash.

Protrusions: ASP Pallid Bone.

Head: ASP Gravelord Grey.

Face: ASP Holy White.

Eyes: ASP Blood Red.

All: GSW Gloss Varnish (for a wet, hatchling look).

We tend to shy away from using shades of black on our miniatures, but since DM Ben was suffering from some paint paralysis, he decided not to overthink everything. It’s not like someone can hold up a perfect museum portrait of these Mosquito Larvae and cry foul!

Nothing spells success after a completed paint sesh more than when you come up with a new color combo that you know has legs for future applications. And that’s right where we netted out with this buggy green baby. This fun shade of green will be perfect for future creatures – friendly or adversarial. Army Painter has so many amazing washes, and this was the first time we tried that Military Shade, which sings on ASP Maggot Skin.

With regards to our Mosquito Larvae DnD 5e stat block, this was a trickier search because just about everything was positioned as a swarm, and these particular miniatures are well past their tiny stage. The closest we stumbled upon was this Carrier Mosquito by World Anvil. Our Larvae aren’t fully formed, so their flying mechanic just didn’t make sense here.

So, then we found this Giant Mosquito Creature by Pyroka3D. He actually made a really slick STL, and you can download it for free here. He even added some DnD 5e stats (AC 18, HP 63, Att: Proboscis +6/2d6+2, Bash att +6, 1d6+2 for a fully formed creature. So, since these nasty buggers haven’t completed their full transformation, DM Ben will just lower the AC to 14 and hit points to half 33. However, it would be fun to have a few of them turn into full blood suckers during combat!

So, we’ll give this one a go in the coming weeks and see how it comes out. Should be a fun follow-up post!

Greetings, fellow quackers! We have some not-so-cuddly creatures to showcase for you today, and the sculpt leapt out at us the second we saw this one in the designer’s library. Let’s waddle our way to it!

Continually building our free Wandering Monster Wilderness Trek table is always at the back of our minds because traveling to new places is just a core mechanic in our DnD campaign. DM Ben needs to be able to continually pull new options from our table without the stress of making a TTRPG encounter at the last minute.

Some Dungeon Masters just wing it or just draw from an existing module table, which is totally cool, but there’s just something incredibly satisfying about 3D-printing a scenario from scratch to use as a random travel event later in your own game. Sometimes, DM Ben even pulls an encounter from our table because he is dying to play it, or he just wants to liven up a particular game night!

We found some trippy zombie ducks that we think we can use in any number of ways, including:

As new Wandering Monsters.

As a crazy swamp guy’s personal soldier squad.

As a new prize for The Collector’s crazy creature collection.

If everything goes well, DM Ben plans on utilizing all three storylines. First, he’ll tease these fierce feather snappers in a Wandering Monster encounter. Then the party will learn they actually belong to a hermit deep in a swamp who doesn’t take kindly to trespassers. We’ll finish with The Collector wanting one for his personal collection, and it’s up to our adventurers to capture a male and a female.

The magnificent mallard in question comes from the mighty Schlossbauer. He’s dubbed this one a Bog Hunter, and it’s a free download in his amazing library of STLs. He seems to share that same passion for DnD monsters as we do, as we often find ourselves 3D printing out five-ish of each his STLs so we can instill enough chaos into our party’s travel plans.

These back-from-the-dead waterfowl have some nice big eyes, so DM Ben was willing to pick up a brush this past weekend and get to work. He once again asked The Google to recommend some Army Painter & Green Stuff World paint combinations that weren’t too technical for his skill level.

Flat Black Prime | Slapchop Base.

Head: FAN Emerald Forest with black drybrush.

Body: ASP Hardened Leather with FAN Leather Brown drybrush.

Wings: ASP Gravelord Grey with GSW Skull Linen Dip blotted on top.

Beak & Feet: ASP Fire Giant Orange (with black toes).

Tongue: FAN Barbarian Flesh (with Soft Tone wash).

Eyes: John Blanche Fiery Vermillion

Edging: FAN Matt Black randomly in any of the STL’s divots.

Wash: cover the head and body with FAN Green Tone.

Lower Half: GSW Gloss Varnish on the legs and feet (for a little mild wetness effect).

For the base, he used our tried-and-true ASP Tidal Wave technique for a couple of random water spots, with AKI’s Water Gel Effect over the top. For the dirt ground cover, ASP Desolate Brown is a rockstar; optionally, add a light drybrush of ASP Forest Sprite. And then finish that off with a swampy grass tuft.

DM Ben pictures these nasty ankle biters as more of a pack unit, so he’ll probably do five to ten of them in total. These went pretty quickly once he finally stopped overthinking the wing colors. For their stats, we have a lot of geese and ducks in our office complex parking lot, and they’re mean SOBs. Hence, he wanted to translate our disgust for them in the game.

The D&D Wiki gave us a solid Giant Duck 5e stat base: AC 13, HP 30, Att: Beak +5/1d6+3, Claws +5/2d6+3. We’re just going to tweak the AC to 17 because have you ever tried to catch a duck? And then we’re going to add a swarm effect: if three or more ducks are within 10 feet of each other, they get an extra bite attack that round. Also, we also loved this Quack trait we saw from another version: DC 15 Wis save or fear for 1d4 rounds.

Now all that’s left to do is update our free d20 DnD Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster Table! We’re tinkering with the frequency and the methodology for triggering a roll on the table. Two options: (1) Each player rolls a d6, and if one of the table results is a six, then a wandering monster is triggered. (2) The DM rolls a percentile dice, but the specific percentile ranges from 10 to 30%-ish based on the circumstances around their long rest or travel.

Greetings, fellow forest forgers! Antler glad it’s another weekly installment of Miniature Monday?! You’ll have to forgive the groan joke, but we got a daily pun calendar for the office here in 2026, and we might be enjoying it a bit too much.

Fresh off our 3D printer, we’ve got a new woodland foe to add to your DnD monster library. DM Ben is always looking for new additions to our Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster table, and these horny fellas have the perfect muscle to rob your party blind. It’s one thing to briefly see a deer stand upright during a hunt, but it’s another thing when they start flexin’ on ya.

We were a bit surprised to see how long it had been since we last added a Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster, especially since our campaign has had so much outdoor travel lately. Thankfully, the mighty Schlossbauer was kind enough to offer another free download – the Weredeer!

Now, we would never openly complain about such a talented creator being so kind as to give us so many wicked-good DnD 3D prints. So, this isn’t negative feedback; it’s just a friendly reminder to be cautious when removing the supports around those antlers, as they’re a bit fragile (even with Siraya Tech Tenacious mixed in with our usual AnyCubic resin).

DM Ben didn’t mind giving these mighty beasts a color run. Resident Painter Kimmy Utah is trying to push through a tough existing batch of TTRPG 3D prints, and as we mentioned above, he really wants to add some new enemies to our Wandering Monster table. We also wanted to try some recent flock we got off Temu for an upcoming review, so the time to paint these guys was now!

We had a lot of luck painting a slick Druid-esque woodland throne (by Loot Studios), and we thought those colors would translate nicely here. Also, we used that same sorta scheme on some creepy crawly vines. Hence, we had some easier steps we were comfortable with right out of the gate.

Sadly, DM Ben left his cherished painter’s notebook on the kitchen counter, so we’ll circle back tomorrow to quickly fill in the paint steps here. Our new office mascot puppy, Winnie Lou Who, makes work mornings quite chaotic, so it’s easy to forget things these days.

The good news is they’ll be a snap for you to try on your own!

We found a fun Dnd 5e Stat block from World Anvil for a lower-level Weredeer monster: AC 12, HP 28, Gore: +5/1d6+4, Bite: +4/1d4+2, Humanoid DC 11 Con Curse, Range: +5/1d6+2. So, if you go with these simpler stats, you’ll need to ensure the ambush is large enough to make the battle interesting.

Here we go rumblin’ and stumblin’ into another Wandering Wednesday! We’ve got a brand new monster for your 3D printer, but can’t decide where this meanie should go! Let’s talk it out!

Is today’s DnD 3D print more likely to show up in a dungeon delve or wandering the wilderness? The 3DRPG team went back and forth on how to best categorize our newest bad guy. We’ve put him indoors for now, but honestly, this one could go either way, and we’ll share why later in the post.

Our featured miniature comes from good ol’ Schlossbauer and his robust library of completely free STLs. Like, seriously, follow this amazing creator. We saw this nasty Black Imp in his library and instantly got all the right feels. This Black Imp has no eyes, but his mouth and creapy suction-cup feet do all the heavy sensory lifting.

No microscopic eyes to worry about here, so DM Ben “volunteered” to color up a pack of these nasty creatures over the weekend. We had recently watched a cool monster skin-tone video by our favorite YouTuber, Miniature Hobbyist, and wanted to try his tutorial out anyway.

The crouching pose on this model is so intense. We can feel that menace coming out of nowhere to try and make us his lunch. The big mouth, pointy teeth, and oversized tongue are so darn cool.

This uninvited enemy seems like a dead ringer to travel in packs and use group tactics to overwhelm a tired and surprised adventuring party. When it comes to Wandering Monsters, we like to print five to seven of them so DM Ben has plenty of encounter-building options.

So, let’s cover the paint steps here in case you want a quick, easy set of steps to work off of before you introduce your players to these chatty chomping cathys.

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Skin P1: ASP Pastel Salmon.

Skin P2: FAN Red Tone Wash.

Skin P3: Soft drybrush of FAN Tourmaline Skin.

Tongue: FAN Wyvern Fury (with a FAN Soft Tone Wash).

Teeth: GSW Skull Linen Dip (with a FAN Soft Tone Wash).

Feet Tips: ASP Malignant Green.

Mohawk: ASP Nobel Skin with FAN Wasteland Clay drybrush.

Base: Americana Burnt Umber with ASP Forest Sprite.

We should have done a better job of edging the Mohawk, but that’s an easy fix. We also might go back and add a little GSW Fang White to portions of the teeth.

Initially, we thought maybe this could be our ambush monster for Briar Thorne’s hostel, The Bramble Bush Boarding House. That’s our homebrewed Hovertrain pitstop encampment for dropping off passengers and taking on new ones. However, we’re not sure these guys are woodsy enough. They seem more dungeon-esque to us. The Wendigo miniatures we 3D-printed the other week seem like a much better fit for a forest ambush.

We’re not quite sure yet which specific DnD 5e stats work best here. Maybe we use an Ethereal Marauder as our base reskin here: AC 14, HP 32, multi-attack +6/3d8+4 damage. We couldn’t reach a team consensus here at press time, so we’re going to ponder the numbers a bit more.

Until next time!

Nothing says Wednesday like a mitful of new Wandering Monsters, right?! Well, today we’re going to showcase a rough and tough STL from one of our favorite, support-free creators! Meander this way…

Our campaign has a ton of upcoming travel, so we’ve really made a concentrated effort to wildly expand our 3D-printed miniatures and scatter terrain for this key outdoor theme. Don’t get us wrong – we adore a good TTRPG dungeon crawl, we’re trying to stay laser-focused by building out the next chapters of our ongoing storyline.

Today’s crafty creator is no stranger to 3DRPG. Brite Minis is a staple in our monthly Patreon subscriptions and in our weekly slice sessions. You get all-in-one DnD miniatures with no necessary supports and the base included (so we can avoid that annoying glue step). They cover a wide range of themes and go out of their way to appease their fan base. Nothing but love for Brite Minis.

The eyeballs are very forgiving in this dangerous DnD STL so DM Ben didn’t mind picking up a brush this time. Besides, he’s been chomping at the bit to try some new Green Stuff World wood-friendly paint pots. He intentionally experimented with four different takes here just to see how these pigments looked on a deadringer forest creature miniature.

Regular 3DRPG followers know how much we’ve enjoyed these slick dipping inks from Green Stuff World. We’re just so impressed by them, and it’s pure bliss to follow Miniature Hobbyist’s YouTube tutorials with this full set in hand. DM Ben is a below-average printer, but his work always comes out a tad better if the arm’s length rule is applied.

Here you can see that we testdrove GSW’s Skeleton Brown, Walnut Brown, and Swamp Brown. We also used one of our tried-and-true ASP Dark Wood colors. Skeleton Brown is still our fav, but it’s nice to have other wood options to keep things fresh on our Wyrmwood game table.

We especially like the backside of this Wendigo miniature. Those human-ish, grotesque spines ignite some goosebumps, but in an uh-oh player way. Full disclosure – we didn’t even realize that this was an actual DnD 5e monster since 3D-print creators often have to change the names of their STLs to avoid copyright infringements. After reading the intriguing descriptions from the links above and seeing all its intense abilities, we completely understand the mystery and madness of this creature.

There’s even a beffier stat block version, but our party of six adventurers is level five, so we’ll stick with the lighter stats for now. You could always use the tougher stat block for the squad leader.

DM Ben included a couple of bonus paints here as he’s trying to embrace experimentation and practice. Sometimes he gets paralyzed with color choices and either tosses the DnD miniature on our towering pile of shame, or he just keeps repeating the same old color combinations.

Prime Flat Black | Slapchop Base.

Body 1: GSW Walnut Brown.

Body 2: ASP Dark Wood (with Vallejo Ochre drybrush).

Body 3: GSW Skeleton Brown

Body 4: GSW Swamp Brown

Head & Back: ASP Brownish Decay.

Face & Spine: ASP Pallid Bone.

Eyes: Contrast Flesh Tearers Red.

Antlers: GSW Elfwood Brown.

Optional: Hair, ASP Forest Sprite.

Optional: Apply a Brown Wash over the GSW Walnut Brown.

The key to these steps was just mustering up the courage to try new things. DM Ben did his predictable, safe ASP Darkwood Brown, but then he gave it the ol’ college try for these other paint combinations. No harm, no foul, because they all turned out to be worthy game table mini drops.

Now all that’s left to do is update our free d20 DnD Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster Table! We’re tinkering with the frequency and methodology of what triggers a roll on the table. Two options: (1) Each player rolls a d6, and if one of the table results is a six, then a wandering monster is triggered. (2) The DM rolls a percentile dice, but the specific percentile ranges from 10 to 30%-ish based on the circumstances around their long rest or travel.

We have some hefty travel through The High Forest coming up, so DM Ben wants a few more freaky nature foes in our free ongoing Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster Table! Let’s add another, shall we?

Our free d20 table never ends, as we continue to use it in our ongoing DnD campaigns. DM Ben always wants plenty of replacement encounters at the ready. Besides, it’s a blast to keep 3D-printing stuff and have them at arm’s reach to easily insert into a game.

Not sure about you guys, but boy howdy, do we love to make different woodland monsters. They’re a bit easier to paint because Army Painter Speedpaint offers some great colors that alleviate some of that color-up paralysis that we all get at times. Also, many great YouTubers out there have excellent forest-painting tutorials, including the good ol’ Miniature Hobbyist.

The mighty Schlossbauer seems to share our affinity for woodland monsters, and he has the perfect free download with this amazing Needle Blight sculpt. We inadvertently lost a bit of his mouth due to poor slicing on our part, but that’s ok, as we always print a live test and consider our first paint job a bit of an initial experiment. Besides, does anyone ever really just print one amazing monster? Nah, you want a bunch to “make it rain” on your unsuspecting party!

So, again, no eyeballs here, so DM Ben was happy to give it a go on the first paint job attempt. His color scheme was inspired by the swampy Shambling Mound he did earlier (which was thanks to Miniature Hobbyist’s excellent paint tutorial). Still, he has some ideas on how to make future additional 3D prints of this model a bit fancier.

Now, poor DM Ben is pretty hard on himself and believes he’s a very below-average model painter at best. However, he’s cool with his results because the Arm’s Length Rule is a painter’s best friend. Army Painter Sand Golem is excellent for leafy foliage, while Rigor Mortis is solid as a darker green tone for things like limbs. Also, you just cannot go wrong using Dark Wood.

We just overlooked adding our favorite woodland Speedpaint color: Forest Sprite. We actually nearly spilled an entire bottle the other weekend, and our therapist says it’s still too soon to talk about it.

Flock can really help bring an iffy paint job to life, so we enjoy adding it to our miniature bases, even though we always make such a mess while doing so. DM Ben asked one of his daughters for some leaf scatter for Xmas, and he was pleasantly surprised by the insanely large bottle he got. Leafy flock for days, y’all.

We just love how its oversized knuckles just drag on the ground. So frickin’ good! In terms of DnD 5e stats for this troublemaker, the default Monster Manual stats are just too squishy: AC 12, HP 11, +3 att/2d6+1 piercing…unless you want to pair a bunch of minions with a bigger boss.

Thankfully, mastermind DM Dave has some slick Needle Blight variations which you should definitely check out! You could try his Fire Ivy Blight to make them last a round or two, or the tougher Moss Blight monster. DM Ben is going to try the Fire Ivy one first: AC 13, HP 27, +3 att/1d6+2 damage, Constrict. However, since we have six players at level 5, he thinks they should have tougher armor so AC will go to 16, the HP to 35, and the attack to +6 so it’s a tougher fight when they swarm our unsuspecting party.

Now all that’s left to do is update our table!

Insect monsters are always fun to put down on the table to generate some unnerving buzz (pun intended) for your players. We’ve got another 3D print download option to grow your creepy-crawly collection.

Last week, we shared a nifty 3D-printed Predator Wasp by the almighty Schlossbauer while also showing off a cool paint scheme we learned from the delightful YouTuber, Miniature Hobbyist. Today, we’re going to show how we tried out another technique with another buggy monster!

Longtime readers know we’re playing the free, fabulous D&D Beyond Acquisitions Incorporated 5e module. There’s a really fun mini Dungeon Crawl where the adventurers must explore an underground hideout dubbed Tresendar Manor. There are a few bug monsters inside, and DM Ben wanted to broaden his monster options while simultaneously growing our free d20 Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster table (see below for more).

So, let’s start with our 3D print, courtesy of Brite Minis and their ongoing value-stuffed Patreon. We instantly fell in love with this Mothman the moment it fluttered onto our monitor. How could we possibly resist painting a squad of these imposing bug boys?

We went right back to the same painting tutorial by YouTuber Miniature Hobbyist, as he had a simple two-step process to color some wings on a mighty three-headed beast he was painting. That massive monster had quite the wingspan, and that’s the coloring part we really honed in on for these Mothman miniatures.

Now, it’s important to note that we didn’t mirror his specific primer base or use the exact orange wash brand he did for our 3D print, so it was going to be a challenge to replicate his wings perfectly. Still, we felt we could get close and walk away with a pretty fun new monster miniature to add to our baddies collection.

We’ll show you all the colors we utilized, but let’s start with those flaky wings, which inspired us to grab these minis from our pile of shame in the first place. Miniature Hobbyist simply slapped on some Orange Wash and then followed it up with a dry brush of Army Painter Fanatic’s Wasteland Clay.

Our inspiration model in his video features more translucent wings and more detailed features. So, those 3D-print characteristics certainly came into play here. Still, we’re pretty happy with our results.

Now, the rest of our colors came out aces, and DM Ben will color up several more in these same color steps. With any sort of pack monster, we prefer to 3D-print and paint five of them to pair with a squad leader. These guys give us plenty of soldier vibes.

So, let’s review the paints we utilized to get these buggy bastards onto our game table. Even though it seems like we’re using a lot of paint bottles, the steps here are actually quite simple.

Flat Black Prime.

Slapchop Base.

Wings P1: FAN Orange Tone Wash.

Wings P2: Drybrush FAN Wasteland Clay.

Body P1: ASP Burnished Red.

Body P2: FAN Orange Tone Wash.

Eyes & “Nose”: ASP Blood Red.

Arms & Legs: ASP Pallid Bone.

Horns: Citadel Contrast Skeleton Horde.

Head & Claws: ASP Grim Black.

Feet: ASP Malignant Green

In hindsight, we should have done the claws on his hands in dark grey or that same Malignant Green we did the feet in, but no big whoop. One thing a good hobbyist learns in their painting journey is not to dwell on their paint choices. Learn from them and quickly move on to the next one.

Next, let’s talk DnD 5e monster stats for our flying mayhem! We found a nifty one: a Mothman 2014 5e similar version (AC 13, HP 42, multi-att Claw +3/1d6+1 & Wing +3/1d4+1, even cooler spells, and a claw attack that requires a grapple check). There are also a couple of boss versions with one from World Anvil and another one that we especially like called a Giant Feymoth.

Lastly, let’s add these guys to our free Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster table as a replacement pick. We really want you to keep rolling a legit d20 each time you need to utilize the table below, so some on-deck replacement monsters are certainly great to see.
