The other day, we shared our 3D-printed Portal scatter terrain for our DM Prep encounter inside Tresendar Manor. Next, it’s time to show off what sort of freakish aberration is going to come through it!
We’re a big fan of this dungeon delve with D&D Beyond’s Acquisitions Incorporated free module. This dungeon crawl doesn’t throw 25+ rooms at you and instead, offers a very manageable set of encounters that your group can run through in a couple of sessions. Today, we’re sharing our monster miniature picks for Area 10: Far Realm Rift.
The adventurers can attempt Arcana to deactivate the Portal ruins or Sleight of Hand DC 15 checks to sabotage them. DM Ben doesn’t mind these selected skills and DCs, so there won’t be a change there. However, the results will be slightly modified:
After six rounds/one minute, another monster is supposed to spawn. DM Ben will play loose with this rule based on how challenging the encounter unfolds, meaning he might make it more than six rounds if the fight intensity explodes while their rolls don’t.
First, let’s talk about the encounter mechanics and Challenge Rating. In the prewritten module, this chapter in the adventure is designed around level two characters and a single Gibbering Mouther. We’ve instilled a ton of homebrewed scenarios, so our players are level five at this point. Hence, we need to increase the difficulty so that this battle keeps the players on the edge of their seats.
So, even by adding three Gibbering Mouthers (instead of one), it’s still considered an easy fight. We have several players in the group with multi-weapon attacks, so single monsters rarely stand a chance. DM Ben just might open with two of them and then bring in a third after a round or two of fighting.
We’ll also nudge the attack to +4 but knock the damage down to 4d6. Another option here is to give our 3D-print version, several bite attacks, and more HP (and act more like the mother of the monster group).
Now, let’s talk miniatures. First, we’ll share our 3D-printed Gibbering Mouther by Yasashii Kyojin Studio. It’s a free download, and it’s quite an intense sculpt. We’re going to pair this freak creation with two pre-painted minis.
Resident painter Kimmy Utah was the brush master behind this one, and the team released a collective wow when we unwrapped it! She just nailed jolting eyes, countless teeth, and gaping mouths beautifully. We just love this 3D print!
For the other two monsters, we leaned on our robust pre-painted collection and pulled these two smaller Chatty Cathys by WizKids & Pathfinder. The first one is by WizKids and is from their Aberrations set. The second is by Pathfinder and is from their Dungeons Deep set (and technically called a “Mouth Horror”). Shockingly, we didn’t have the Mouther from WizKids’ Monster Menagerie 3 set, but definitely use that one if you have it!
Hopefully, DM Ben and the players will laugh and laugh and laugh here. 😉
Until next time!
