Good ol’ Miniature Mondays – back at it with another free 3D print that you’ll be sure to get “schooled” by…pun intended! Let’s dive in!
Our DnD campaign features twisting, deep, dark caverns throughout, and DM Ben wanted to try some more water-style 3D-printed TTRPG terrain. He had some pretty swell success with Milestone Heroes’ caverns, but realized he needed more monsters at the ready to populate those cloudy waters.
Longtime readers might remember an awesome wet one-shot we did for our homebrewed Night Hag bastion. The encounter involves the players traversing through some shallow, twisting underground caverns. There’s one stretch where the players have to move stealthily (Dex DC 12) throw the water or risk being attacked by a Quipper Swarm.
Well, the players really enjoyed that DnD scenario, and then DM Ben realized they’ll have to make their way back through the sometimes knee-deep water. Sure, he could have those same pesky fish strike again, but where’s the intense fun in that? We’re 3DRPG printers – certainly we can come up with another scaley sea creature for the return flight home, right?!
Thankfully, the mighty Schlossbauer had our marine animal desires covered with this ruh-roh free download. For all his floating or flying creatures, he includes these slick bases and a perfectly fitting hole within the main STL for the perfect fit.
Another reason we picked this snapping sea life was by simple happenstance. DM Ben was fumbling through his recent Green Stuff World Dipping Inks set, and a cool color caught his eye: Green Shark Skin Dip. After a quick paint test, he quickly fell in love with this shade and had to give it a go!
It’s interesting in that sometimes we let the miniature or scatter terrain piece dictate an article, and other times, a specific paint wows us and we can’t resist trying that new fancy pigment!
Yes, there are eyeballs on this fishy wishy, but they’re nice and big, so DM Ben took a deep breath and grabbed a brush. Turns out this boney biter wasn’t too bad at all!
Nothing to it, right?! And you could certainly try some other greys and browns if you wanted to do this fish in different colors for easier initiative and combat tracking.
Since Dwarven Forge water tiles are essentially impossible to obtain without selling your firstborn, we had to create our own and ensure they could be mixed with the others. That job gets easier when the sculpt and width of our new undead sea monster looks like it naturally belongs within our gameboard.
You can see how this 3D print is ideal for caverns, as these baddies look so cool when you drop them on your terrain tiles. We’re not quite sure what the 5e DnD water world stats will be here, but we expect to find something with a mighty bite attack and a smashing tail attack. Maybe something along the lines of a Merrow or, even better, a Zombie Cavefish…but a little beefier.
Pretty cool, right?! Better hope they’re not biting that day. 😉
