We’ve got more mechanized goodness in this week’s Train Tuesday, so buckle up and let’s take a wild walkabout through Waterdeep in style.
Once The Forgotten Rails’ founders (also known as 3M) successfully demonstrated that mechanized units were here to stay in Waterdeep, the age of the Gnome Tinkerer absolutely exploded. Continuous Steampunk innovations are being spotted all over the city! Let’s take a closer look at another insane invention.
We were putzing around the Brite Minis’ Discord the other week, and a fan was showing off his new Space Walker 3D print. After a few gasps, we collected ourselves and quickly sent this out-of-this-world STL to our resin printer. This is such a fabulous support-free model, guys. And it even comes with an optional shield and snug pilot.
Today’s tale is a testament to the buried treasure sitting in your favorite 3D Print Discords. Hobbyists love to share their work, and it can be insanely inspiring to periodically check in and see their interpretations. Like, how in the name of Pelor did we miss this particular 3D print as we’ve been an extremely satisfied subscriber for quite some time?! Well, this bewilderness stuck with the 3DRPG Studios team, and it was a sharp reminder to always stay on top of our favorite Discord postings.
No eyes, no problem on this DnD Steampunk print, so DM Ben didn’t mind doing a paint run here. Brite Minis always includes fully-colored miniatures in its release gallery, which is frickin’ awesome for us novice painters out there. And we were true to their interpretation here.
Nothing crazy, right? We dig it. The key is to leave portions of the Slapchop base intact, so that the metal appears scuffed from its mission work in the field.
Since this is our 97th installment of Train Tuesday, we’ve been fortunate to establish some themes for certain categories within The Forgotten Rails. For example, repair workers and mechs follow more of a yellow-ish construction vibe, while military-style security forces utilize this Empire Strikes Back Endor rebel pathfinders’ scuffed-up green.
So, how does DM Ben plan to use these lumbering mechs in The Forgotten Rails campaign setting? Welp, these Waterdeep Walkers are sent in anytime a robot’s circuitry inadvertently goes haywire, and the only remaining course of action is to terminate the koo-koo Construct. Omin Dran wants any Construct calamity cleaned up quickly to avoid negative publicity.
Since these units take up a perfect 2×2 d20 square area, the pilot miniature is rather small. That’s fine by us, though, as that mini just indicates that the vehicle is occupied. We have another complementary miniature in mind when the aeronaught has to leave the cockpit and spring into action.
In an earlier post, we showcased these Hunters (by EC3D Designs), whose sole purpose is to take down unruly robots…as quickly and quietly as possible. We might switch to a different miniature later because we prefer these Hunters working in squads versus solo ops. Either way, when this mop-up mini is spotted in the wild, there’s definitely trouble right around the corner.
You also might recall our other Walker post, where we showcased these upright, open-air models also by Brite Minis. This model is a non-combat version and is meant to take adventurers and explorers through places that are much trickier on horseback. Think of these as more of commercial people movers.
Lastly, let’s talk DnD 5e stats on these Space Walkers. One really cool approach comes from World Anvil and their Mech Pilot build. Their Steampunk write-up is really detailed and a fun read. We’re going to simplify the numbers approach here by taking this Executor robo skin we found on Pinterest (unable to link to original author) and revising it to fit our jam.
So, here’s how we tweaked those starting stats:
This Waterdeep Walker’s sole purpose is to search and destroy. Now, which way did crazy Constructs go?! 😉
Until next time!
