Our work campaign is finally getting to its big villain showdown, so we’re continuing to try and flush out all the corresponding content around their new “estate” acquisition! Let’s get into it!
First, a quick storyline refresher: the group has a hot lead that a witch, disguised as an old woman in the High Forest, is the dangerous Waterdeep kidnapper. Omin Dran has made a deal with the party where they can keep her land and the spooky-a$$ cabin it sits on if they can eliminate her (by any means necessary).
Assuming the players succeed, they will receive a deed to their new home (via a Documancy Satchel). As an added bonus, Omin Dran is providing them with a small servant staff to ensure they run at maximum profit. These NPCs will also be providing intel back to Dran to ensure there’s no funny business going on with the group.
So, today, let’s flush out what some of those hired help NPCs might look like in our campaign and maybe even for yours. DM Ben likes the idea of the butler and housekeeper being orphaned siblings who escaped a life of poverty and worked their way up the servant ranks.
Their last name is pronounced “Whit-Glove,” as the “e” is silent. Barnabus is the older brother whose whole identity centers around his work. Stella, the younger sister, is a bit of a brat, nosey, and rather clumsy. Each attendant carries a heavy British accent and is very prim and proper.
This brother-sister duo doesn’t have an ounce of fight in them (too barbaric), so they’ll fold like a cheap suit if they encounter any sort of local threat. However, they are very loyal and serve the party to their very best ability.
DM Ben is pondering, letting the group randomly roll their traits here. There’s even a wild Maid Set Guide on GM Binder if you ever want to turn them into full-blown characters.
As for their miniatures, we really love these two butlers from Cast n Play’s terrific Townsfolk Vol. 2 Kickstarter. We’ve nearly 3D-printed the entire set, and they’ve come out so well! Resident Painter Kimmy Utah’s paint dance card for 2025 just filled up!
DM Ben will give the party the opportunity to slowly build up their new compound with a series of sidequests. Their rewards will come in the form of trade to ultimately turn the dilapidated cabin into a proper home base.
For example, if the group helps the local carpenter capture a former thieving employee, he’ll build them an additional room. Or, the local blacksmith might build them a couple of defenses in exchange for some rare minerals found in a nearby cavern.
Lastly, DM Ben is also going to grant the group one of the early prototype service constructs from The Forgotten Rails. Omin Dran had a few of them in storage, and he asked Tink Urbelle to attach a power source (and secret homing beacon). These particular robots aren’t nearly as good as the ones powered by Hovertrain’s arcane Corederite Glass, but they can still do basic functions (and have room for add-on functions).
The mini above was a failed print (missing his service tray), and we were just testing out some of the ArmyPainter Speedpaint Metalics. So, this isn’t the final service construct miniature but we thought it would be fun to share.
