As 3DRPG continues to bring must-print STLs to your attention, it’s funny how we can inadvertently focus on a particular creator. And it’s happened again, but we swear, it’s just a coincidence. We’ll explain why!
Of course, when picking a particular STL to showcase, the file’s overall greatness is first and foremost. We also look to see if the 3D print fits into one of our ongoing featurettes (The Forgotten Rails, Wandering Monster Tables, New NPCs, Kinda Sorta Portal, etc). Other potential factors are ease of print (no supports, bases attached, no post-print gluing, etc). Lastly, we see if the miniature or scatter terrain has a place in our office campaign or family game since that makes it easier to include potential story integration suggestions.
So imagine our surprise when we feature Yasashii Kyojin Studio twice in one week! Of course, he does great work, but he’s a lower-volume creator, so it’s just a happy coincidence. Still, we love his stuff, so we’re totally down with pushing him back into the spotlight again this week.
We even featured the raw print on our swell Facebook Group back on 12-13-23. Sometimes, it’s wild how long it takes for a particular miniature to make it all the way to the game table.
This is another STL plucked from Yasashii’s freebie section. Umber Hulks are a fav monster type here at 3DRPG Studios, so we snatch up a new great sculpt whenever possible. You better have a fierce magic weapon handy if you want to pierce its tough natural armor!
Resident painter Kimmy Utah took the artist lead on this one for us. The colors here are awesome, but the pictures won’t do her paint job justice. This guy just looks like he belongs underground. We did a simple base with just some small stone and dirt flock to give it a burrow vibe.
Now, how will we introduce this cavern dweller into our ongoing work campaign? Our adventurers have nearly taken over the Night Hag’s compound in the high forest. From the outside, her cabin seems like a simple, one-room shack in the middle of nowhere. However, she’s actually constructed an underground network of rooms to carry out her evil experiments in a quest to look forever young and beautiful.
In our last session, the group found a secret trap door leading to the first room of her underground lair. This will be the perfect opportunity for them to encounter our new Umber Hulk.Â
DM Ben loves to leave clues for an eventual monster run-in, so he pulled great advice from the Forgotten Realms Umber Hulk wiki page. They pointed out things like cave-ins, circular paths (to cause confusion), and even a pitfall trap. We’re going to add a burrow mound to that great list but we have all the terrain tools to put these visual clues on the gameboard.
Lastly, let’s get our monster stats straight here. We’re going with the classic 5e build here: AC 18, HP 93, and a zinger of a multi-attack (2 claws at +8/1d8+5 damage and mandible/bite at +8/2d8+5 slashing damage. It also has Confusing Gaze (DC 15 Charisma), which can cause all sorts of chaos!
Our Umber Hulk won’t be hunting the group, but it will be very displeased to see someone roaming its tunnels. It stayed clear of the Night Hag but will have more confidence against the players. It might burrow away and try to fight another day if its HP gets low fast.
DM Ben’s goal is just to let the players know these underground caverns are anything but safe. 😉
Until next time.
