He’s cute, he’s cuddly, and eventually… he’s gonna know a lot of things. We’re talkin’ about this week’s baby companion by the talented M3DM (aka Mia Kay)!
We were fortunate enough to grab this feathered friend when it was still a freebie from her Thingiverse collection but as all of us STL hunters know, n0-cost files can come and go in the blink of a dog. Still, be sure to take a gander at her free collection of files as she still has plenty of juicy minis for your 3D printer.
What we especially love about this particular owl is his bowl full of jelly belly and how he rests his lil’ claws on it as if to say, “Boy, that was a tasty meal.” He painted up quite well and definitely deserves a resin run to ensure you get all the subtle model details here.
Now we loooooove DnD 5e familiars here at 3D RPGÂ so this Hootie mini is also perfect for your Familiar animal library. He’s excellent in stealth and perception (advantage, baby) so he makes for a swell scout.
Another reason we probably have such an affinity for this owl is he reminds us of Bubo from the original 1981 classic “Clash of the Titans” movie. Of course, he was a mechanical owl consisting of brass & iron who was sent by the Gods of Olympus to aid Perseus on his quest but it’s certainly the reason why we instantly identify with owls as a pick here.
So that got us thinking a little more about Familiars in DnD (excellent article breakdown!). There are the staple critters including spiders, wolves, cats, hawks, etc but what about the unsung ones? Let’s highlight some of our lesser-known favs so you don’t accidentally forget about these options next time you have to make that pick.
And if you’re looking to upgrade your Familiar, check out this fun video by The Cleric Corner.
Just remember, don’t be so quick to turn your back on a Familiar next time or you’re gonna miss out on some extra RPG goodness! 😉
