As our adventuring party begins to explore the unexpected caverns below the Night Hag’s cabin, we need to start building out rooms and encounters. Adding a Flesh Golem miniature seems like a no-brainer (pun intended).
When you encounter a Dungeons and Dragons golem of any sort, one’s instinct is of course, swords up! Well, what if we put that reaction on its heels and see if the players use their words instead of their steel?
Let’s start with our miniature selection. We’ve chosen this amazing Flesh Golem by EC3D Designs. This terrifying creature is from their Beasts and Baddies Kickstarter (featuring all supportless STLs btw).
The talented Kimmy Utah took on the task of brushing this misunderstood monster, and she came through with flying colors! It truly looks like he was stitched together Frankenstein-style, and that’s exactly the vibe we want here.
Even though our office campaign is filled with bloodthirsty adventurers, DM Ben wants them to rely on all their skills and stats and not just combat abilities and items. There are always times when a player’s skills and abilities give them the best opportunity to succeed. Plus, nothing but combat will get old in the long run.
That said, we still have to be ready should combat become the only option. The DnD 5e Flesh Golem stats work just fine for our six-character, level-five party: AC 9, 93 HP, multi +7 att/2d8+4 damage (and a slew of traits).
For the encounter, the cavern tunnels are filled with echoing sounds, and one passageway, in particular, will grab their ear as they approach: the sound of heavy stones being moved and stacked up ahead. As they approach, they will hear numerous odd intermittent grunting noises, too.
They will also see a small circular opening in the top middle portion (12 feet up from the 20-foot ceiling) of this makeshift barrier. On the other side, the room is pitch black, so nothing is visible at first glance.
The first player to get eye-level with the wall opening and look in will suddenly see a large eye appear. This startling eyeball will require all players in view to make a Wisdom DC 20 fear check.
Once the party composes themselves from the initial shock, the poor flesh golem will have the communication skills of a five-year-old. It will explain that he doesn’t want any more stitches from the mean old lady. He calls himself “Ka-Dave-erous” (which is his butchered way of saying “Cadaverous”).
The cavern continues past his keep-out wall, so the group will want to get past him peacefully or forcefully. It will be up to the group to ultimately devise a plan to succeed here! DM Ben will only describe the miniature until more of the stones are removed (just to keep that intrigue going).
Until next time!
