It’s finally DnD game night here at 3DRPG Studios! Our ongoing office campaign typically rolls some dice once a month and we thought it would be cool to share a few gameboard setup photos with y’all (for some added inspiration in your own games)!
Drumming up a new daily TTRPG post can be a bit tricky on game day, as DM Ben needs a lot of prep time to ensure everyone has a rousing time at the table. Nevertheless, we didn’t want to leave our wonderful readers hanging, so we thought sharing a few setup pics would be a hoot.
At the conclusion of each session, the gang snaps a couple of gameboard images so we can all remember where we left off from the previous sesh. For example, in the pic above, you can see the large forest area we strung together to illustrate the players’ arduous journey to locate the mysterious Old Woman deep in The High Forest. Hopefully, you guys recognize all sorts of terrific pieces featured here at 3DRPGPrints.com.
DM Ben would create an event in the forest and add the corresponding miniatures. Once that encounter was complete, he would remove some of the pieces on the long, extended gameboard and move the players about ten d20 squares forward, where another interaction would occur.
We had all these different scenarios (most of them homebrewed) occur on the way to the big boss showdown:
The group had a blast going through all of those wild encounters. They did manage a Long Rest somewhat close to reaching the perimeter of the Witch’s cabin, so they’re at least near full strength. Unbeknownst to them, there is ultimately no way out of this one!
So poor DM Ben has to lug all the DnD goodness from his house to the office and drop it all on the conference room table. Typically, he transports one large toolbox, one large plastic tub, and two larger rectangular boxes. We use about 70%; the rest are generic pieces for party curveballs or packing mistakes (see below).
Our Big Boss Showdown will feature four potential battle points:
That’s what we need to transform our mish-mash conference room table into for tonight’s big dice throwdown.
Poor DM Ben left a critical box at home, so he had to improvise with backup scatter terrain and miniatures to properly build the Cabin’s main interior room. Isn’t that always the case, though, whenever dungeon masters have to take their show on the road? We always forget something!
No worries! Our second attempt at building out the room turned out swell. The only piece we didn’t have handy was the rug (which initially was going to conceal the trapdoor to the basement. Instead, DM Ben will describe creaking floorboards and give the group a perception check (DC 15) to spot some faint light from below). The secret trapdoor will now just be under the large main table (detected with an Investigation check of DC 12).
And then here are our final setups broken into all the key sub-encounter sections for tonight! First, the woods leading up to her cabin (where our Scarecrow is streaking towards his ex)!
Next is the Cabin’s exterior, where they will first encounter the “innocent” old woman doddling around outside with her beloved dog and stoking her firepit.
Then, our final iteration of the central interior room, which we kept tweaking repeatedly right up to game time!
And then here is the secret basement where one of the captive kiddos is trapped. In this dark and dingy room, one of the party members will betray the group and trap them! Diabolical! But basically, because one of the players wants to roll up a different class. 😉
Lastly, here is the backyard hedge maze. This is where the last child is being kept. The temperature of this encounter is going to heat up fast!
Let the games begin! Until next time!
