One of the things that makes Dungeons and Dragons so darn fun is just collecting all the mysterious stuff! After all, we’re hobbyists so it’s already evident that we have a hoarder problem, right? Beyond miniatures and terrain, there’s another whole category to obssess over and that would be good ol’ fashioned cards. Let’s dive in!
We think cards really exploded in popularity with the release of D&D 3.5 edition. Do you remember the color scheme rules? Green (at-will), red (encounter), and gray (daily) made it so easy to track and use your character’s powers. And then mixing spell/feat cards in with item cards gave you a player deck. It was the perfect mix of utility and flavor.
But with these nifty, initial spell cards came many other offerings too including:
We managed to snag these 5e Magic Item Cards by Eventyr Games thanks to their successful Kickstarter. They also have a great blog but also a lot of swell offerings. But today we’re all about these delightful cards!
We’re a bit picky with this particular RPG accessory so let’s start with our selection criteria:
We’re happy to say Eventyr Games delivers on all fronts here! The cards are just outstanding and we’re so pleased with the overall quality. If you order the full set, you even get them in a really sturdy traveling card box. However, we prefer to slip ’em in card sheets inside a larger binder for easy browsing and organizing.
In fact, DM Ben will pre-select the cards during prep for any particular shops in town so when the characters ask the cranky merchant what’s available, they can just quickly peruse a sheet (which saves a lot of repeat Q&A’s). Plus, the DM can group the magic item cards by type. So, if the party walks into an alchemy shop, just reach for a few binder sleeves of potions that match their current level range. Visiting the local blacksmith? Easy enough – just pull out the binder sleeves containing armor and weapons.
Eventyr Games even just released a great D&D supplement to go with all these cards called the “Wanderer’s Guide to Enchanted Emporiums” so be sure to check that out as well!
Lastly, during our article research, we stumbled across this absolutely wonderful article by DungeonsandDragonsFan.com so be sure to give it a read.
