Keeping up with our inadvertent tavern-ish theme this week, we’ve got another fun, sitting, mysterious miniature that certainly deserves a storyline in your own DnD campaign. So muster up some courage, and let’s see what this curious fella in the back of the bar is up to…
DM Ben love, loves home-brewed side quests in our DnD campaigns. This infatuation probably comes from all those years of playing World of Warcraft online. More so, though, we let our 3D-prints do the talking. Whenever we see a must-print mini (or scatter terrain piece), it’s only a matter of time before we find a way to add it to the game.
And that’s exactly what happened with this Mysterious Man by Loot Studios. This shady bar patron is from their high-value Fantasy Welcome Pack. It’s stuffed with all sorts of cool tavern miniatures and scatter terrain pieces – perfect for our townsfolk obsession.
3DRPG is especially drawn to 3D prints that evoke warm and fuzzy movie memories. This one is a dead ringer for the infamous Hobbits-Strider encounter at the Prancing Pony in Lord of the Rings. Probably intentional by the designer, but still, well played, Loot Studios…well played.
Resident painter Kimmy Utah tackled this 3D print. We think she nailed it. All the right colors are in all the right places. The STL came off our resin printer a tad on the delicate side, and we lost part of his pipe. Whatev’s, though, right Arm’s Length rule?
So, now, let’s kick around some potential ideas on how this mysterious miniature might fit into your campaign.
DM Ben is still wrestling with which story angle fits best into our games. Right now, we like the idea of him initially spying on the party and ultimately sizing them up for a mission he needs to complete for his employer (e.g. a combo of Secretive Spy and Middleman Contractor).
First things first, let’s remind everyone about another NPC, Dumoun – a Path Finder for The Forgotten Rails. Omin Dran has hired a small group of Dwarves to scour the Sword Coast and identify potential Hovertrain routes.
Sometimes, though, there’s a potential path ripe for the picking, but there’s some sort of “obstacle” that must be removed. Things like a large animal nest, a group of farmers, a monster’s lair, etc. That’s where this cryptic ranger comes into play.
Dumoun relays the critical path intel to Omin, who then reaches out to our guy. He keeps a low profile and goes by the call sign “Darkfall.” If he can’t take care of the problem himself, he’ll scout out adventurers at the local tavern until he finds the suitable muscle for the job. Let the shenanigans begin!
Until next time!
