A big boss battle showdown definitely needs the right miniatures to ensure the encounter hits the proper adventuring climax. Today we’ll use Miniature Monday to show our Night Hag’s three forms and which miniature goes with which state she is in at any given time!
A brief recap for our first-time readers: Our work campaign adventuring party is hot on the trail of the abducting Witch of Waterdeep. The game group has battled deep into The High Forest (where few have ever returned) and is now on her doorstep! Our necrotic Night Hag is throwing everything but the mimic kitchen sink to slow them down, but it looks like the big boss showdown is finally upon us!
DM Ben places a ton of value on utilizing immersive RPG miniatures in his DnD games. Why else would he lead the charge on building a 24-7 3D Print Channel on Twitch, a daily blog here at 3DRPG, and doing other side projects? It’s for the love of the game. Simple as that.
So, with that said, he wanted to ensure he had a fun miniature (and face card) depending on which Witch of Waterdeep the game group is encountering at the time.
Here’s where we settled on our enchantress miniature swap. We’re using three miniatures by our beloved EC3D Designs STL creator. Our disguised Night Hag takes the form of a innocent, frail old woman. Her obsessed spell form takes on a beautiful lady with long, flowing black hair. Lastly, her true form as a Night Hag will undoubtedly make an appearance somewhere in the final fight.
A quick recap on the stages of our Witch of Waterdeep. The first stage is her old woman form which she uses to keep eyes off her kiddo capturing biz. Who would ever suspect this frail old woman? Certainly, Omin Dran’s authoritarian arm will look elsewhere. “oh, That old lady that lives deep in High Forest in that run-down cabin? Oh she’s harmless.” That’s what our villain wants everyone to think.
Then there’s her desired, original form. An old wandering night hag longing to keep her original, beautiful form before she was cursed as a Night Hag. She uses the tears of her young victims to produce a magic aura that grants her this original, attractive look, but she can’t maintain it for very long (but she’s obsessed with finding a way through her magic).
Lastly, there’s her true form — a vile sorceress who’s meant never to walk the world or see her original beautiful, vibrant woman-self return. DM Ben loves this particular face card (by Inkwell Studios) because it shows her fake form starting to wear off. So creepy, right?!
We also had a conundrum when picking these witch-form miniatures because the Pathfinder Battles’ Undead Horde set already includes this epic prepainted miniature. We’re a 3D-print blog, so we needed to show you a great STL you could print yourselves, but this Pathfinder mini is so darn good. DM Ben is pondering using the prepainted mini as the transformation stage. This could be a game-day decision!
Still, don’t be shy about swapping different miniature sculpts out based on the game situation — it’s really fun!
