No better way to welcome the upcoming weekend of gaming than to showcase another brilliant paint job by the loveable crew over at Laughing Bear Games! Let’s get to it!
We need another (potentially) non-hostile encounter for our 3D-printed Wandering Monster Dungeon Delve table. Sometimes, our players must use their wits and subsequent skills rather than their swords to put out the fuse on a tense situational encounter.
So, for our 3D-printed NPC, we’ve selected the Nun for this week’s wandering entry. This slick sculpt comes courtesy of STL Miniatures and their Orphanage set. This holy vessel is built like a linebacker, but she’s all business in this dungeon.
Now that we’ve picked out the perfect DnD miniature, we once again called on the mad brush skills of Laughing Bear Games. Some DM chatter ensued about the specific colors, but we always let the artist call the shots — no need for 3D RPG to ever infringe on their creativity.
Arkansas Adam wanted to skip the traditional garments worn by your prototypical nun. That is, let’s pass on all that usual black-and-white garb (like this Brite Mini above), as that look doesn’t really fit our underground encounter here.
Let’s mix it up with something a little more daring and striking. DM Ben wholeheartedly agreed, as this dungeon encounter calls for something a bit more bold and fearless.
With that stern persona in mind, Laughing Bear Games went to work and produced this stunning paint scheme. It just sings, baby! To us, a pro painter really shines in how they do the face of a miniature. Is there anything tougher? We think not!
For this interrupted rest, the players will see our soul sista coming a mile away. She’s a “heavy walker” with plenty of quirky noises from all her dangling accessories. Hopefully, the site of this mini will channel our players’ worst teacher disciplinarian. We’ve all had one! For DM Ben, his first-grade teacher, Sister Eileen from St. Francis Cabrini, immediately came to mind – she was such a tough cookie!
Now, let’s set the scene. The player on watch, we’ll hear this new NPC stomping down the hallway and mumbling some sorta prayer in the process. The DM should describe her approach like it’s straight out of a horror movie. This dense reverend mother just appears from the shadows, walking towards their dungeon door at a brisk pace, her dark red cape flowing around here! She’s coming through the door one way or another or make a ton of unwelcomed noise in the process.
Our monster monialis, that’s Latin for nun, goes by the name of Sister Mary Francis. Her deity is Sarenrae, and she fiercely services this dungeon to ensure any of its fallen properly pass on to ensure they don’t return in undead form. The problem is she has become fanatical in her duties.
One would expect a compassionate demeanor, but instead, she is all business. Her personality is abrasive, and nothing stands in her way when servicing the recently deceased. She could care a less what the adventurers are doing in the dungeon. Instead, she grills the players in the hopes of finding out who they recently struck down and where.
The players must use skills like Persuasion, Intimidation, and Charisma to keep Sister Roberta from causing a scene and alerting nearby guards.
DM Ben Portuguese accent dialogue bullets will include:
Just sprinkle these phrases into the conversation and guide the players through the encounter.
The players can also do Religion and History checks (DC 14) to see if they recognize this spooky type of nun. Rumor has it that certain Order of Sisters walk freely through dungeons searching for fallen souls who need guidance to the afterlife. They go by the name of “Soul Finders.”
These ladies are fanatical and often brainwashed into serving a severe interpretation of Sarenae (due to their own trauma). Dungeon rulers often welcome them in because it keeps unwanted undead from messing with their stone lairs.
STL Miniatures makes NPC stats a breeze because each set release includes 5e stat blocks for their minis! We picked the Sister Fighter option: AC 14, HP 85, Multi Att +6/2d8 +4. Then we’ll take the spells from their Sister Cleric block (DC 13, +5 to spell attacks), including Sacred Flame, Cure Wounds, Sanctuary, and Shield of Faith. So cool.
Once again, a huge thanks to Arkansas Adam for his fantastic paint jobs!! We’re really jazzed to share more of his excellent works in future posts. Be sure to visit his Instagram, Facebook, and Etsy (where you can request a custom quote for some paint jobs on your own pile of shame).
Now, all that’s left to do is update our table!
