It’s time for another Miniature Monday of the Mimic kind, as we have three new barrel mimic options for you to print up and slip into a future DnD encounter! Even better, each of these TTRPG miniatures is a free download by the amazing mz4250Â and Teirale.
DM Ben wants a couple of additional mimics (on standby) for a big boss showdown in our work campaign, and once again, our 3D Printer gives us plenty of choices.
First, we needed to pick a piece of ordinary scatter terrain with crates and barrels. That wasn’t too hard to muster, mainly because we selected an everyday, mundane item for them to impersonate. It seems like every Kickstarter pledge comes with some sort of crate and barrel STL.
We’re intentionally focusing on barrels today, but chests and crates are quite popular mimic forms, so the format is whatever tickles your fancy. DM Ben likes barrels because it wouldn’t be unusual for his players to see those in the encounter dressing.
First up, mz4250 whipped up the Kegger Golem Mimic! His bulky, wooden form makes for the perfect pose. We just adore this grump. Plus, a free download and easy to paint – what’s not to love?!
Next, we have the four-legged Barrel Mimic by the talented mz4250. This free download was a snap to print and was colored by resident painter Kimmy Utah. This one reminds us of a rabid dog looking for its next meal.
Lastly, Teirale has a whole collection of support-free miniatures, and this stacked barrel mimic version is our favorite. This toothy monster has a great attack posture and looks like it’s about to leap off its wooden perch and pounce on ya. And yes, we printed all his mimics for our collection. 😉
The remaining question is how we will handle the DnD 5e stats on these guys. The standard stat line is AC 12, HP 58, Attack +5/1d8 +3 bludgeoning, and the Adhesive special ability.
DM Ben likes when there are lessor monsters on the board that can distract the players from the boss (in our case, the witch) and set up tactical advantages such as flanking. Minions from 4e is a great example. We don’t want these wooden unfriendlies to be at 1 HP; instead, they need enough health to stay in the fight for a few rounds.
So, we did some web searching to see what sort of stat variations other gritty gamers have come up with for their campaigns. MysteriousDrD on Reddit came up with a Lesser Mimic stat block that works great with a slight tweak to the damage: AC 10, HP 20, Attack +5/1d4+1 (vs their 2 piercing/1 acid).
Also, the Gallant Goblin did a lovely series of different types of mimics in both written and video form, so be sure to check those out!
Until next time!
