Greetings, fellow terrain mongers! This new Scatter Chatter series has been a hoot so far, and there’s definitely no need to let up on a good thing, right?!

STL sourcing is still a challenge at times, but we can at least point you in the right direction. The true goal of this ongoing featurette is to inspire you to 3D-print some of these pieces (or something rather similiar) for your own DnD game! For DM Ben, adding carefully curated TTRPG scatter terrain always elevates the presentation and immersion of his gameboards. Besides, scatter STLs are darn fun to 3D-print and paint!

Today, we’re going to focus mostly on some food items, as well as a couple of fun horse farm troughs. Their most common placement will certainly be in busy city markets, a hotbed of new mission opportunities. However, these same pieces can be placed on village home and dungeon tables to give clues about who the room’s inhabitants might be or how long they’ve been gone.
Again, it would be very tricky to tell you exactly where each small scatter terrain piece comes from, so instead, we’ll highlight the go-to creators in this fun STL category:
These fine sculpters all have insane market-themed sets, and you’ll honestly have more choices than you’ll even know how to deal with here. We encourage you to check them all out, then download the pieces that best fit your current TTRPG needs.

Let’s start with a couple of fun water troughs! The first one has some questionable drinking water for horses, and is perfect for a town setting outside of a tavern, perhaps. We were unable to source this specific one, but certainly easy enough to find something similiar. The second DnD scatter piece is more like a big TV tray for pigs and is from STL Miniatures’ Halfling Farm Set.
DM Ben painted all the pieces in today’s DnD Blog post and used AKI’s Water Effects (a fav from our 2024 Holiday Gift Guide) to fill the water compartments. He did one murky water and one fresh water just to mix things up a bit.

Next up, we have a bunch of fab food basket options for you to 3D-print and paint! We’ll break them into several categories below, but let’s start by listing the paint colors DM Ben used in a single list.
The key takeaway core paint color here is the basket color, though! We hadn’t really found a paint pot we liked until we tried GSW Elfwood Brown. The key is to put on two coats, and then you can do a wash over that depending on how dark you want them. Several of these featured baskets are from STL Miniatures’ awesome Food Vendors Set.

The mushroom baskets are a big draw here because of our beloved herbalist Keanu Leaves NPC, who runs Water Deep’s best potion shop, “One, Two, Tree.” DM Ben made a few home-brewed magic items, and he has an open quest with the party to collect as many rare fungi as possible for his crazy concoction collection.
The fish baskets were also quite enticing, because of another one of our angler NPCs, Ewin McHook, proprietor of the Mermiad Cafe! Ewin is also an expert angler and carpenter – the dude does it all. We also love water encoutners so these hooked fish are going to get plenty of use!

The remaining TTRPG baskets are fruits and vegetables. These are perfect for local city markets, tavern tables, kitchen store rooms, and even ship and Hovertrain cargo. Lemons, apples, potatoes, and onions are all staples. DM Ben used a corresponding colored wash whenever it made sense. Army Painter’s Fanatic Paint Set offers many amazing washes, including yellow, green, and brown. He uses a wash often, as they almost always elevate the final paint jobs.
Until next time!
