Tomb Thursday P54: Secure the Sultan

Greetings, fellow desert dawgs! Today’s DnD blog post is all about one of our favorite miniature categories, and we think you’ll like these 3D prints just as much as we do. Let’s begin!

DM Ben envisions two parts to our desert campaign setting. Think Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: part of that amazing story takes place in a capital city with a Sultan, and another portion is in an underground tomb. There’s an intense office debate about what our first Sultan miniature should look like, so we’ll share that final miniature next week. However, today’s creator spotlight made his security detail an easy choice. And we sure do love guards of any type so the gang really enjoyed preparing today’s DnD read.

Brite Minis is a staple here at 3DRPG Studios in sunny Chandler, AZ. We’ve been a monthly Patreon subscriber for many years, and that’s no accident. Their minis continuosly make their way to our slicer thanks to no supports, an insanely reasonable ongoing cost, a large backlog of accessible files, and a steady stream of worthwhile sculpts. Today’s haymakers are called Saracen and are from their August monthly Patreon.

Novice painter DM Ben was really nervous about “volunteering” to paint this squad of five up, as there are a lot of straight paint lines that require very steady hands and young eyes. Still, we employ a strict Arm’s Length Rule at our game table, and no unkind comments are allowed.

• Prime Flat Grey.
• Weapon: ASP Broadsword Silver and ASP Dark Wood.
• Hands/Face: FAN Barbarian Flesh.
• Turbin: GSW Komodo Khaki.
• Coat P1: ASP Tyrian Navy + Dark Tone Blue Wash.
• Coat P2: FAN Dragon Red + Red Wash.
• Coat P3: FAN Demonic Yellow.
• Pants: ASP Holy White.
• Leather Bits: ASP Hardened Leather.
• All: Dark Tone Wash.

With these steps, don’t fret about how things look at first. The last step is to apply a Dark Wash over the entire miniature, and everything just pops after that! DM Ben was really down on himself, but when the wash went on, he was all smiles.

Here’s a cool shot of how these guards look in a marching order on your gameboard if, for example, these guys were on patrol. Pretty frickin’ cool, right?! We’re super tempted to do another set of five, so we have more minis to put on the map at once.

Lastly, we wanted to sneak in one recently completed piece of scatter terrain. This Fox Statue is from Cast n Play’s Terrain Essentials Interiors Vol 2 Kickstarter. Specifically, it’s from their Asian Temple Set. Still, blows our mind that this KS only did $87,000-ish because it’s just an insane value for what you get when you include all the stretch goals.

Remember our Arm’s Length Rule from above? That’s super important here, as this scatter piece was on our Pile of Opportunity from many moons ago, when we only had a Prusa FDM printer. We also did our ivory paint scheme here again, which on an FDM isn’t doing us any favors when it comes to layer lines.
