Happy holidays, everyone! Boy oh boy, do we love this time of year. Thanks for giving us a break to hang out with our friends and family over turkey week. DM Ben used that downtime to paint a slew of new hovertrain cars, and we’re excited to share this new Construct hauler car today!
The Forgotten Rails runs on Constructs – hard stop, do not pass go. Waterdeep’s Omin Dran wants as few living beings’ fingers in this profit pot as possible and rarely trusts anyone outside his small circle.
These mysterious Androids are used in every facet to keep the Hovertrains on time and running smoothly. There are train drivers, cargo movers, security forces, bot hunters, mineral miners, imposing bodyguards, and service droids. The growing list of Constructs just gets bigger and bigger. Sometimes, they’re gonna need a ride.
Power tethering is still a massive hurdle in the Rails’ tech tree. Consequently, they must also be transported to different areas of the Sword Coast to help mine the precious Corederite fuel material and help expand the rails’ reach. That means a dedicated Hovertrain train was pressed into service to ensure they could move freely and cover vast distances quickly.
Thankfully, Aether Studios has the perfect FDM print here! Their marvelous Onasan Line set has all sorts of nifty Construct-carry-cars. We used two pieces (diamond plate golem tiles) to build our this techy Hovertrain car.
Let’s start with a wide shot of this Construct Hauler Hovertrain car. We intentionally did one tile with Golems and another with empty stalls to add a little intrigue for the adventurers as they come through one of the side doors.
As usual, we did empty tiles on the opposite side so a larger party of miniatures could move around freely. This intentional layout also gives DM Ben some flexibility to drop a piece of scatter terrain or two, depending on the specific encounter that’s about to unfold.
The exterior utilizes that 80s punchcard look, and we went with that rustic dark red vibe for the color scheme. We sandwich that look with a metal edging above and below the center section. Lastly, we go over most of the train car with a black wash. Hovertrains and their powerful engines are a messy business. 😉
Aether Studios has a myriad of door options! You can intermix them with any car with absolute ease. For this Hauler car, we liked using the traditional metal door. The Army Painter Speedpaint’s Hoard Bronze is one of our favorite colors to use for instances like this.
Pretty darn fun, right?! We actually made a second Construct Car that we’re excited to share with you in a future post, as DM Ben is planning a larger encounter using this fun, new Hovertrain terrain. 🙂
Until next time!
