Hey, who doesn’t love a good ambush in their DnD game? Well, we sure do! Thank goodness our 3D printer has been working hard to create new miniatures to support this upcoming knucklebiter narrative.
The Forgotten Rails continues to make final preparations for its inaugural passenger service run, but concerns linger about its overall safety. Plenty of citizens don’t want anything to do with these hovering marvels and the impact they’ll have on the lands throughout the Realm. Initial Hovertrain routes are certain to come under fire, and Dungeon Masters have to be prepared!
We’ve created a couple of fun one-shots that fit the bill, including Raining Rock Ridge and Molly Snipes. Alas, we inadvertently forgot the importance of properly setting those Nervous Nelly scenes. No DM likes to scramble for DnD pieces or settle for a subpar gameboard. Thankfully, these types of key ingredients have been top of mind recently, and we’ve got a cool “supporting actor” to show off today.
We’ll start with this injured villager by STL Miniatures. This poor fella just didn’t survive the chaotic Hovertrain ambush and took one too many arrows to…well, everywhere. We adore this entire set, but you have to treat the print pull with kid gloves; otherwise, you’ll sadly lose a couple of bits during the support-removal process.
Resident painter Kimmy Utah grabbed a brush for this one, and we really put her patience to the test. When we inadvertently damage a 3D print, we rarely re-do it or even care. We’re firm believers in the Arm’s Length Rule, so those instances where it’s a snap here and there simply aren’t a big deal. It happens frequently in our beloved hobby. Let out a quick mutter and sputter and simply move on, right?
When comparing the rendering to the final 3D print, it’s obvious that a few of the finer details were lost during the 3D print cleanup stage. Those arrows never stood a chance with DM Ben’s Wisconsin sausage fingers. Snaps happen, but don’t give up on the piece here. Your players will love this one and quickly look past any imperfections.
Additionally, we sent Kimmy Utah a 3D print that DM Ben had originally attempted, but we wanted to see what her superior brushstrokes would achieve with Loot Studios’ Flickering Knight. She can be so inspiring with her work, and we truly use her final pieces to improve our own painting skills here at 3DRPG Studios.
The very first thing we said was, “Why on earth didn’t we do our candles in white? We honestly have no idea. Talk about a brain fart, right? The good news is that now, every time we see candles in a 3D print, we’ll reference Kim’s example (as we keep a fun paint journal of all our pieces). However, we’ll combine her white wax shade with our ASP Zealot Yellow flame and get the best of both worlds.
DM Ben’s plan is to utilize the silver knight version as a squad commander and then the original, darker paint jobs as the soldiers. The Forgotten Rails tells its passengers that these Constructs are just doing double duty: acting as a light source while keeping Hovertrain goers safe. Does that sound convincing? 😉
Until next time!
