We like to use WIP Wednesdays to give everyone a sneak peek at what we’re working on for our ongoing DnD campaigns (work game and family game). Today, we’ve got a piece of scatter terrain that DM Ben is trying to flush out and see if it has a place in one of the big upcoming gameboards. Let’s look at it more closely together.
It’s no secret that 3DRPG adores scatter terrain for our DnD games. Minis and terrain are probably so appealing because they bring back fond childhood memories of all those army men and action figures’ play days. Also, though, a 3D-printed piece’s replayability is essential, as printing and painting any piece requires so much of our precious, valuable time, and scatter terrain definitely checks that box.
We’re spotlighting this Floor Mirror from Cast n Play’s Castle Set, part of their immensely successful Terran Essentials Interiors Kickstarter. Backers will certainly the insane value from that pledge as it was stretch goal after stretch goal hit during that fun campaign. We’re not sure we’ll ever finish printing all the scatter terrain from that series.
Once again, the talented Miss Kimmy Utah accepted the task of painting the floor mirror up and we just love it. She nailed the glass with this metallic silver color and then put a gold finish on the decorative edging. Perfect. DM Ben’s biggest concern is keeping his darling niece from grabbing it for her doll house. 😉
We spotted this nifty mirror in one of our walled display cases and wondered aloud if we should include it in the Old Woman’s hideout encounter. Right now, there are five distinct areas on the game board: traveling through the forest, her front yard, the cabin’s main room, its basement, and the backyard. The picture above was from the last work sesh, and the group was about to approach her front yard.
DM Ben plans on the group ultimately finding several more secret rooms within her compound, so that’s the most likely landing spot for this scatter terrain piece. Putting it in the main room would just be too crowded. Plus, slowly discovering those secret areas in her house of terror will be pretty cool.
Our first hesitation about using this floor mirror is that it might be too predictable and a bit basic. Like, this isn’t a Disney movie — this is DnD, baby! However, a mirror makes sense here because our Night Hag is obsessed with her image and is doing everything she can to be this beautiful woman. Thus, DM Ben wants to incorporate it.
The bigger questions are: what does the mirror do? Is it magical? Does it speak to her? What purpose does it serve her?! We like the Game of Thrones angle with the Red Witch and how the mirror slowly revealed her true form. So, maybe if a character looks into the mirror, it reflects back a hidden, dark secret about him or her. For example, our party’s Paladin is a ferocious fighter who often teeters on his alignment and clerical beliefs. Or, our war wizard looks into it, and it reveals how he is secretly hiding his violent tendencies and an insatiable appetite for revenge.
It could also be fun for the player to share his own dark truth or for the DM to reveal something he has observed about that character during the campaign (where maybe they don’t even realize it is happening). Either way, we think we’ll skip any sorta animated mirror expression and talking head and instead go with a chilling visual effect!
Still, whaddya think? Is that how you would incorporate this mirror into a Witch’s hideout? Feel free to share a suggestion on our Facebook or Instagram article release post.
Until next time!
