Yikes! Only 13 entries in our Dungeon Delve Wandering Monster Table so far?! Where’s the love, man? Time for some painful TLC.
Dungeons and traps go together like PB&J. So we definitely need to sprinkle a few in here over the second half. Their expected cold stone presence underlines the importance of having a Rogue in the party while ensuring everyone is using the right skill tactics (Investigation, Perception, Thieves Tools, etc).
Thankfully, Crippled God Foundry has an excellent trap pack with all sorts of hazardous options. These maniacal contraptions were part of their high-value Dungeon of Despair Kickstarter. We expect to share several of these babies with you before this DnD Dungeon Delve table is done.
This spiked wall trap was a perfect pick because it’s super easy to drop in and out of a dungeon. Ease of play always earns high scatter terrain scores here at 3D RPG. You can place these two tiles in any room to convey the point (pun intended). Or, of course, they fit perfectly into any narrow hallway scenario. Mind you, we also could have done this as a poison needle trap, but for this instance, we like the Star Wars trash compactor sorta vibe. 🙂
Here’s how we expect the scenario to play out. One of our snoozing adventurers has a bit of a “Jimmy Leg” and moves around when those eyes are wide shut. So, during the course of his/her’s Zs flopping, the spiked wall trap is inadvertently triggered, and the group will suddenly hear a loud series of gear sounds. The doors to their resting room will also suddenly lock.
DM Ben will start counting down from 10, then place these two walls in the room and explain spikes are beginning to break through the brick on both sides of the room!
Now what? We perused this great trap guide on roll20 to get some initial thoughts as well as an excellent Reddit post (and notes by “Ironforged). Our new pointy walls move 5′ towards the middle of the room on set initiative counts, like 20 – 15 – 10 – 5. This trap is considered “Dangerous” so damage will be 2d10 and a Dex Save DC14 for half. A failed Dex save also means the player is restrained for one round.
Players can use the following to stop the pain:
Picking the lock on the door (Dex + Proficiency Bonus from Thieves Tools if proficient) is really the best escape plan here, as bashing the door down becomes problematic due to the shifting room.
Now all that’s left to do is update our table!
