Wandering Monster: Ribbiting Encounter

Greetings, fellow swampy sidesteppers! We’ve got another outdoor group of unfriendlies ready to pounce on unsuspecting trespassers. Let’s begin!

Two of the miniatures from this set jumped out at us (pun intended), and they’re the reason behind this bigger project. Ongoing 3DRPG readers know we homebrewed a traveling portion of our DnD 5e Acquisitions Incorporated module because we love a nice balance of content in our ongoing campaign.

DM Ben always wanted to create a spot on our maps called Mushroom Ally: a dangerous swath of land inhabited by a variety of deadly, sinister shrooms. And now we have even more fun 3D-printed miniatures to answer the call! Our adventurers are forced to go on foot through it because The Forgotten Rails refuses to risk one of its prized Hovertrains.

Today’s creator is talented wifi1973. He’s got a couple of amazing series on his MakerWorld.com profile, including this hopping good Frog Cult Swamp Tribe. What’s especially cool about this frog collection is that he offers them in the traditional 25 mm/1d20 square size and a 50 mm/2x2d20 size. Today we’ll focus on the regular miniature sizes.

Since another word for mushroom is literally toadstool, these were the first two DnD STLs that set everything else in motion. DM Ben was off work this past Monday for some house stuff, so he painted today’s featured 3D prints as a batch paint. Like, how could we not include these as a Wandering Monster encounter deep inside Mushroom Ally?!

Next we have a frog-face drummer and a spearman soldier. We lost part of one of his drumsticks during de-plating, but no big woop. We just thought these poses were really slick. We might do a few more of the warrior on the right, as that one would be perfect as a patrolling squad.

Next up were these two robed TTRPG miniatures. The first toad would certainly fit the role of a magic user, while his Batrachian counterpart here would either be a Rogue or a Cleric. DM Ben often doesn’t add enough spell casters to a monster squad, so he wants to fix this going forward.

So, let’s talk about the paint scheme used in this large batch, including the larger versions that we’ll show off next week, along with some suggested DnD 5e stat blocks. Again, DM Ben is a novice painter, and the team always appreciates his willingness to try his best (on top of all the rest of his insane dungeon master duties).

• Shell: GSW Military Shade + Green Wash.
• Mushrooms: ASP Blood Red or ASP Hive Dweller Purple.
• Base Skin: WAR Goblin Green.
• Chest: FAN Necrotic Fles.
• Eyes: Black + FAN Dragon Red.
• Tongue: FAN ASP Pixie Pink + Soft Wash.
• Teeth: GSW Skull Linen Dipping Ink + Soft Wash.
• Leather: ASP Harened Leather.
• Leaves: ASP Sand Golem.
• Spear Tip: ASP Gravelord Grey.
• Wood: GSW Skeletal Brown + Strong Tone Wash.
• Drum: ASP Pallid Bone & ASP Hardened Leather.
• Bases: utilized the same rough stone from here.
