Greetings, weekend-warrior adventurers! Hope those dice did their job. Seems like you’re out of steam, though, and need a long rest. Welp, you’d better pitch those tents and pick who gets first watch!
Longtime 3DRPG readers will already know that we’re in the midst of a very large, ongoing DnD campaign being played by both the office team here in sunny Chandler, AZ, and again, in our family home game in beautiful Gilbert, AZ. The adventure is a mix of the free D&D Beyond Acquisitions Incorporated 5e module, infused with a mountain of home-brewed TTRPG content, which we feature regularly here on our lil’ ol’ DnD blog.
What really surprised DM Ben the most so far is just how many different environments he has to be prepared to put down on the game table each month. We’re talkin’ classic dungeons, wild wilderness, dark caverns, dazzling hovertrains, unexplored villages, and even sandy deserts, just to name a few. All those different types of places mean we need really cool setups for all those long rests, right?!
Even better, we made an epic free Wilderness Trek Wandering Monster d20 Table, which can be used during long chunks of travel time or when the players have to recharge and get all those spells and hit points back! We can’t go through all this trouble to 3D print and paint countless amazing miniatures only to blow it in the ninth inning! Well, that poor planning and lack of vision stop today as we’re on a mission to create the very best outdoor camps for our worn-out wanderers.
Let’s start with an easy campfire entry…the tent. This tarped shelter is a staple, and our 3D printing community is chock-full of great options. We recently colored up two solid picks, but it’s a bountiful harvest when it comes to this particular scatter terrain. Certainly, we’ll post even more examples in the future.
Our first recommended DnD campfire tent comes courtesy of World Forge Miniatures. We’ve nabbed a few of their monthly Patreons as they’re reasonably priced (a mere $7 a month) and offer really strong 3D prints that won’t crumble in your hand when you go to take the supports off of it. This tent was from their Welcome Pack, and this sturdy shelter won’t disappoint! This one defaults to 3×2 d20 squares.
DM Ben was happy to color this DnD scatter terrain piece up, and it was a snap. We especially love it when we identify tent-pole colors (pun intended) that we can use across a slew of different 3D prints. We keep a journal of all our paint jobs that are done in-house and then apply those core colors to future pieces.
See? So simple. Army Painter Speedpaint Pallid Bone makes a phenomenal color for tarps and capes. You can’t go wrong with that choice. If you prefer Citadel Contrast Paint, Skeleton Horde is also a slick option.
Our second tent is by Aether Studios and comes from their must-own Desert Scatter III set. We just adore this creator’s clever designs, while also ensuring their STLs are durable and made to last. This one is called a Rock Shelter, and it screamed “print me” the second our DnD eyes saw it!
Once again, no eyes, no problem, as DM Ben was more than willing to drop down some colors on this insanely creative 3D print. It essentially covers a 2×2 d20 square area, but we’ve included a miniature for scale. Isn’t it just delightful?!
Once again, the colors all come from our core choices:
DM Ben went back over the ground with a subtle grey highlight to bring out some more stones. Simple!
Now you have a tent for the adventurer who planned their supplies seriously, as well as for the silly dude who said he’ll just wing it. One of them is going to probably wake up to one level of exhaustion? Any guesses as to who? 😉
Until next time!
