Greetings, fellow exterminators! Fresh off a fab weekend of DnD hobbying, we got some new vermin for you to catch with your mighty 3D Printer. You might just need a bigger net.

Here at 3DRPG Studios in sunny Chandler, AZ, most of us consider ourselves novice painters. We also value getting things to the table sooner rather than later for the good of the game. While we don’t want to put “raw, grey 3D prints” in play, we do want them to have some sorta TLC color to ’em.

So, when we figure out a reasonable paint scheme for things like crocodiles or turtles, we get energized to try to apply those steps, or a version of them, to other 3D models. Case in point, for our recent ratfolk soldiers. We love these cranky, lil’ guys and think they’ll pair great with our Dwarven Forge Sewers terrain. Even better, we have some additional 3D prints in our Pile of Opportunity that share these rat characteristics. So, let’s keep that TTRPG hobby momentum going!

First, let’s meet our newest cast of characters to come off our 3D printer. We thought this mighty Rat Monstrosity STL by good ol’ Brite Minis. This bulky furry fella is from their May 2026 Patreon monthly release. We love this model’s fierce pose and think he pairs perfectly with our other freshly painted vermin soldiers.

Funny enough, DM Ben called an audible on Saturday and switched up that previous brownish paint scheme for a gray-toned one. His instinct was valid because we don’t want too many of the same-looking miniatures on the table. Besides being ho-hum visually, similarly painted miniatures make it trickier to call ’em out on the game table and even inadvertently slow combat.
Here are the paint steps he tried:
So, that might seem like way too many steps, but DM Ben has been a tinkerer with his paintbrush lately. He’ll keep adding/tweaking until he gets the model to his happy place.

Our other two STLs today are by the dastardly Dutchmogul. We just love his sculpts, and even better, he has a robust library of free 3D Prints. We recently grabbed these two great range-weapon additions to his Rat Foot Soldiers. He calls these pesky guys Rat Pelters, and they turned out so darn good. DM Ben really prefers to put down melee and ranged attackers during an encounter, as it always makes for a better presentation.

Now, he could have kept the same fur brown scheme to match the foot soldiers, but again, he wanted to avoid big splotches of the same thing on his game boards. Plus, that blue-grey looks darn sharp. He used GSW Nightshade Purple for the hat, ASP Hardened Leather for the sling, and then ASP Camo Cloak for their capes and scarves. Clear bases will be a solid choice here as the dirty, grimey terrain underneath each mini is gonna look great.

Finally, here’s a quick look from the back so you can see all the great detail in each DnD model. We’re thinking of 3D printing at least one more Rat Monstrosity, as there would likely be several in any patrol or soldier grouping. Maybe we’ll do the second big fella in brown so you can compare each paint scheme and tell us which one you like better.

Let’s finish up today with some DnD 5e monster stats for our new ratfolk army.
For the first two, we just mashed together some stats from this great Ratfolk guide on DM Binder. For the big guy, we found a great Reddit article that included a Rat Ogre. 🙂
