Miniatures in space? Ummmmm, sure – we’re always down for a few more WizKids minis. Initially, we had no idea what the heck to do with the one we’re featuring here but let’s brainstorm!
Today’s Freaky Friday miniature comes courtesy of WizKid’s Spelljammer: Adventures in Space. Believe it or not, this was the 24th set in the Icons of the Realms line of pre-painted Dungeons & Dragons miniatures (which is now at 29 sets-ish). DM Ben marvels at this set count because he clearly remembers buying the very first set of Harbinger miniatures back in 2003!
Ladies & gents, children of all ages, let’s take a closer look at the adorable Eye Monger. Our new, favorite aberration is a chunky ol’ floating space rock with a big smile and an even bigger appetite. Isn’t it an absolute riot?!
Naturally, the next move was to take a look at its crazy DnD 5e stats to better understand what this baby can do. It’s officially listed in the Spelljammer: Adventures in Space compendium. However, one of the things we love about D&D Beyond is that they let you purchase things piecemeal at very reasonable prices ($1.99 in this case). However, for this article, we just took a gander at the 5etools website’s online version.
We especially loved the “if the target is a medium or small creature, it must succeed on a DC Dex 18 save or be swallowed! Click the image or link above for the full stats scoop.
Our favorite research article link though has to go to The Thieves Guild web team and their epic Harvesting and Loot table feature. Their talented writer’s group has a harvest list for nearly every monster – frickin’ insane. Simply find your monster, roll a skill check against their DC table and you might carve off some extra treasure goodies! Love it.
In the case of our defeated Eye Monger, you would roll an Arcana Check against four table DCs. Our level four wizard, Osavai, rolled a D20 and got 6 result + 5 his arcana skill for a total of 11. That means he harvested 10 of its teeth that could be sold to a sculptor or spellcaster back in tow for a cool 20 gp total (e.g. 2 gp each). Neato!
So the next question is what do we do with this grin-toothed mini for our campaigns? Welp, DM Ben doesn’t envision either of his game groups hopping a space flight anytime soon but there’s still a little mission mischief to be had here!
Either of these could be Wanted for Hire posters in the town square that require the party to hunt down and kill the Eye Monger for a little coin before it does any more damage. And naturally, all harvesting rewards go to the victors here.
Now go forth and slay this… um…freakish eyebally thing!
