Miniature Monday! A New NPC to Drop the Hammer

Boy oh boy, here we go again with yet another new NPC for you to try or to incorporate into your own DnD game.

For this handy NPC, we’re pulling from STL Miniatures classic Boat Builder Set. This collection of salty STLs is perfect for a City of Waterdeep side mission so we knew these beauties were gonna get printed and painted sooner rather than later.

First, let’s get you caught up! DM Ben previously set up a side mission where upon leaving the Fissure through a secret storage room exit by the sea, the party met a little boy named Shamus. The sneaky little lad caught them trying to leave his dad’s fishing cellar (with a few extra belongings) but didn’t rat them out, thanks to a great charm roll by the party Thief.

Since that encounter, a Hansel-and-Gretel-ish sorta story has evolved. Several children from the village have now gone missing, including precious Shamus. Naturally, his dad, Ewan McHook, is incredibly distraught. He’s offered his master craftsman carpentry services to the group to get his beloved boy back (which they will ultimately need to fix up their upcoming remote headquarters).

And that’s where our new NPC comes in! For starters, we needed the right DnD mini to represent our burly, Scottsman-like man. He needs to be a big fella with even bigger muscles…a no-nonsense type of guy who could lift a boat frame on his own. Of course, he’s tough on his boy because Shamus is all he has after his mom was lost to a previous sickness that hit much of the city. Shamus is his world.

DM Ben loves it when NPCs unexpectedly become part of the story. Since the game group now has to try and rescue his son and in turn, they get someone to help them ultimately restore their cabin. The very place that they’re going to forcefully eject this crazy, kidnapper old woman from…so perfect. So you can see how Ewan McHook is going to become a central figure to the group as it starts to build its reputation in Waterdeep. In the future, he could also help them acquire or even build their own smaller boat for any upcoming water transportation needs.

This mini is on a 2×2 set of d20 squares because he’s trying to demonstrate his trade. DM Ben plans to have a backup single-square mini at the ready if a particular moment in an encounter calls for it. We love those in-game mini-swaps here at 3D RPG. 😉
