Our hovertrain glides ever closer to its debut, and today, we will examine all the train car options we plan to 3D print!
As many loyal readers know, we’re all about print plans. We use them weekly to map out what our fab Prusa MK4 3D printer will produce. We pull the desired STLs, slice ’em, and then pick which day each ones will print. All this preplanning keeps our printers running nearly 24/7 on our Twitch channel.
The crazy-talented crew over at Aether Studios is our official STL go-to for this new 3DRPG-printed endeavor, and as we mentioned earlier, they have all sorts of unique, fun sets to print from:
So, we’ll map out which cars will make up our initial modular hovertrain from the sets above.
Lists are your friend when making new DnD RPG game environments. We use them to set mini-milestones and to keep us on track (pun intended). Maybe our lists can be your lists as you build ’em with us here on The Forgotten Rails.
Previously, you might recall that we did a similar brain dump when we were mapping out the design of our starting Egyptian tomb gameboard. However, in this instance, our train cars act as our rooms, right?
With that said, here’s our starting list of hovertrain cars (and corresponding set):
So, a checkmark means we’ve printed the pieces, assembled the car, and it’s ready to be painted. We’re pretty stoked that we have six cars ready to hover!
Several other enticing options exist, but this is our 13-car print plan for phase one of The Forgotten Rails hovertrain line. Do you see how focused we are, though? You can certainly wing it, but your gameboard will take much longer to produce, and you’ll get frustrated. With this in mind, don’t skip this planning stage!
Regarding pacing, our FDM printer currently produces about two complete cars a week. As a rule of thumb, we use adaptive layering in all our print slices, which means pieces take longer, but we also see a big uptick in quality.
So, as we continue to build out all the supporting content around The Forgotten Rails, everything should align to introduce this new dynamic in our DnD work campaign in the coming months.
Next week, we’ll examine the anatomy of a hovertrain by showing you the specific pieces that form a complete train car and how they are assembled!
