Another Train Tuesday installment hovers across your keyboard, and this time, it’s another Construct miniature by EC3D Designs that will surely find a spot on your print bed. Let’s race ahead.
The Forgotten Rails needs a strong starting cast of characters to accompany its magnificent hovertrains by Aether Studios. So, imagine our DnD hobbyist glee when EC3D Designs released a nifty free mini download for their upcoming Ghost City Kickstarter, which launches on MMF’s Frontiers on 9-16-24.
We’re especially jazzed with this upcoming Kickstarter, as EC3D Designs primarily releases supportless models that print insanely well. And their next theme here meshes perfectly with our robotic-constructy-vibe. We missed out on the previous Novus Landing Kickstarter, so we hope it will come with a discount when the new one opens next week!
Today’s featured miniature, again a free download just for signing up for their launch alert, reminded us a lot of Lando’s right-hand man, Lobot, in Empire Strikes Back. Sure, our Construct doesn’t have an apparatus on his head, but he has a mechanical visor and an armband. These accessories contain critical intel like rail routes, radar reports, etc.
So, we’re going to use this 3D print to represent our hovertrain drivers. We’re calling them “Accelerators” because their primary role is to pilot the trains to their destinations as quickly as possible. To portray them as official Constructs, we gave them metallic hair and hands and the usual arcane blue accent to represent their “on” button.
Novice painter DM Ben did the coloring here, and we especially love the cape color (very Luke Skywalker-esque) he used (Citadel Skeletal Horde Contrast). We’ll most definitely be releasing a quick paint guide in case you want to get these onto your game table quickly.
We’re also using more clear bases these days, as it’s just one less thing we need to do for a print. Plus, seeing the gameboard through the clear base is so darn cool. YouTube’s Miniature Hobbyist convinced us that these bases are awesome, and he was right.
The plan is to have all our different types of Constructs be colored the same, with each just named differently via an alphanumeric code of some sort (kinda like all those Stormtroopers). However, since these android drivers are at the top of the food chain, we’re considering giving each one a slightly different color variant (and nicknames)…like maybe a different hair or cape color. We think they would make excellent NPCs in one’s campaign, too.
Lastly, in case you missed some, let’s do a quick roll call of our current cast of characters for The Forgotten Rails.
Each Construct and railworker is categorized into a Security, Service, or Secondary role. We store them in our walled display cases in these same groupings for quick and easy access.
Next, we will show you what these Accelerators drive — our first fully painted engine, done by the brilliant Arkansas Adam of Laughing Bear Games! You’re in for such a treat!
